crazyminx Ever judge a book by it's cover?: ... was surprised to read a review on this subject recently and find that it was under reviews for Books and Magazines rather than the discussion section in Speaker s Corner. However I do think it s an interesting concept so I thought I would add my two pence! I have heard the words Don t judge a book by its cover many times throughout my life, but oddly most of the times have not been referring to books. It s a p...

bruffyboy The film of the book
... is a good topic for me, because I would say I am as much a book man as a film man. Do they ever make a good film out of a book? Invariably the answer is no, but there are exceptions, notably the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Here s what I think: Firstly, the thing that makes books better than films nine times out of ten is the time and effort that has gone into them. Often, these books are years in years in the making, being planned and crafted in their writer s minds before ever a draft comes out. The end result is often as close to perfection as possible, and this is where they overtake films. Because films are shot on such high costings, they don t have forever to m...

bruffyboy Ever judge a book by it's cover?
... love this category! I spend a lot of time in the library, where covers need to grab my attention. I also look through bestsellers on Amazon a lot, an use the cover to get my attention. So, what do I know? First off, there are certain trends you get used to. A lot of crime fiction uss large font for the author s surname, as well as dark colours. Not liking this genre, I often give these a miss. Chick-lits seem to have girl s faces or lips on the cover, white covers with pink text and that sort of thing - again a no-no for me. What I like best are novels that are a bit different -the sort that are postmodern in their desire to push the boundaries and take a risk. Of co...

bruffyboy A literate generation?
... term literacy means the ability to read and write. As an English teacher in an inner city secondary school I can tell you that 30% of our new students enter with literacy levels below those needed to be able to access school-work. Yes, it seems that something like 95% of students never read a book, and the knock on effect of this is that they struggle to write too. The truth is that you learn to write (and read) through reading. In today s world, there are just too many distractions for young people - namely high tech attention grabbing computer systems, and the result is that books are a medium that has been left behind. It frustrates me so much. For example, an 1...
