Advantages: Well written, interesting articles, useful health and beauty advice and it's free
Disadvantages: -
Boots Health & Beauty is a glossy magazine that's sold exclusively in Boots. It's published every couple of months, ie January/February and it's free to Boots advantage card holders. If you're not an advantage card holder, it'll cost you £1. You need to be quick off the mark at picking up your copy though, because they sell out very fast once they've made their appearance on the shelves.
It's generally aimed at women of all ages who have an interest in the latest beauty products, fashion and living a healthy lifestyle. There is one page devoted to 'Men's News' with advice on products for skincare, shaving etc. Each issue is divided into sections under the headings: 'What's New', 'Feel Good', 'Expert', 'Beauty', 'Family' and 'Your ad card'. Articles are generally uplifting, cheerful and geared towards offering the reader positive outlook on life.
The 'What's New' section includes items such as 'the hottest/latest beauty buys' and 'our favourite moisturisers/beauty buys'.
The 'Feel Good' section often includes an interview with a celebrity, with the focus mainly on discussing their health and beauty regimes. There is usually an article offering tips and advice on some health aspect, often including real people who have undergone a health problem during their lives and how they have overcome it or manage it on a day to day basis.
The 'Expert' section deals with some health or beauty issue whereby a panel of 'experts' are called upon to give their advice. This panel can vary, but regulars are Vicky Pennington, a registered dietician who is an in-house Boots nutritionist and Angela Chalmers who is a Boots Pharmacist.
The 'Beauty' section incorporates a wide range of articles and usually includes an update on the latest products. It's certainly not biased towards promoting Boots own products though and you'll find wide ranging information on everything sold in Boots. Examples of articles are a 'DIY guide to sexy hair', 'great skin at every age' and a 'hair masterclass'.
The health section often includes some sort of diet and recipes as well as articles ranging from hair care to coping with allergies. You'll often find readers own experiences of some health-related problem and the effect it has had on their lives.
The 'Family' section includes anything involving families, children, babies or even just couples. It can include items such as finding the perfect spectacle frames for your family, kids fashion and caring for kids skin in the sun.
'Your ad card' provides details of how to make the most of your Boots advantage card. It details special points offers and how to make the most of your advantage card.
Finally, every issue includes a directory of services available at Boots and a page of cut out money off coupons that can be used in store within a specified time limit, usually 2 months. There's a competition of some sort which usually involves winning a holiday.
Each copy of the magazine has around 100 pages and is exceptionally good value for money, particularly if you have an advantage card as it'll cost you nothing.
Summary: A useful, feelgood magazine aimed at health and style conscious people
