Advantages: I get it Free with my Cable Package
Disadvantages: Too Dear, Too Plain, Too CRAP
I reckon, Cable Guide has got to be one of the most useless and rip-off TV magazines about, I am not aware if this magazine is actually on sale all over the country, and not just the “Telewest” cable areas (let me know if its available in other area’s), but I know one thing, it is totally USELESS. I am lucky or unlucky whatever way you look at it, as I get this magazine free as part of my Cable package, but in the shops it actually sells at the ridiculous price of £3.25, yes £3.25 for a pretty useless and poorly put together magazine. What is Cable Guide? -------------------- Well, as I have already stated, it is a magazine that gives us the programme and film schedule of our Cable network, it is fairly thick in size and is out monthly, the trouble is, its pretty crap. What is inside the magazine? ---------------------------- There are various sections to the magazine, some are OK, and some are pretty plain, the actual TV schedules are plain and not much description is given about the various programmes and Movies. There is one or two half-decent section, but on a whole I find the magazine not very good value. New Series: ----------- In this section, it informs us of any new series that are coming out on Cable. Nothing special, but I suppose it does give you the chance to find out if any of your favourite series, are back on your TV screens in the near future. Premiere: --------- This section gives you a pretty decent write-up on any new films that are new to the movie channels. A to Z of this months Cable Films: ---------------------------------- Basically just an A to Z list of movies being shown in that month, this is split into different categories i.e. Action, Horror, etc, but once again, not very informative. Crossword: ---------- I suppose the crossword is OK and it gives you the chance to win a 14 colour TV each month
, it is a cryptic crossword for those of you interested and is pretty challenging. Sports Diary: ------------- This covers some of the Big sporting dates that are arriving on the Sports channels and also gives you a full schedule listing. Front-Row guide: ---------------- Front-row, is Telewest’s own version of Pay-per-view movies, this section is once again, nothing special, you get a slightly better description of the movie, but it could be a hell of a lot better. Daily Listings: --------------- Now this is the main part of the magazine, and this is the part that annoys me, WHY? You may ask, well because it just isn’t descriptive enough, I mean you look at a movie you might fancy and it is limited to just a very brief description of the film, the main stars in the programme and what rating the movie is and that’s it, now if you look at other similar magazines, you are given a pretty decent write-up about the film/programme, which gives you a very decent idea of what you are about to watch, but with Cable Guide, its just a case of watch and learn. Now for the price of £3.25, I would expect a hell of a lot more for my money (that’s if I were to actually buy the thing), and would suggest there are much better magazines on the shelves for a fraction of the price. Oh and another thing, Adverts, there seems to be an advert on every other page (which probably explains why the magazine is so thick.) Summary: Terrible Value for money, if you ask me, that is all I have to say about this magazine and I surely think there is a lot more they could include, as well as giving a better description of the programmes. Oh and if you are interested (something I very much doubt after reading this opinion), Cable Guide has its own web site, which can be found at www.cableguide.co.uk. I am yet to visit this site, I bet it’s a storming site or something, but I very much doubt i
t after taking the magazine in account.

Lorriee - 15/08/01 In July I was sent a similar magazine on trial for NTL cable charging me £1 each month. I have no intention of subscribing. I agree it is crap as it doesn't list the movies for the month which some magazine do. I would rather know what films were showing on all the movie channels instead of listings for films on front row. |
