Advantages: Definately not staid

Disadvantages: Not for kids

A few weeks before Christmas I was in the vet's when I happened to pick up a magazine. It was a new one one me, usually the stuff in the vet's is a bit serious and earnest so I wasn't really expecting something fun but I'd neither seen this nor heard of it before. It was the first issue of Cats Today.
Now, I'm a bit wary of anything published about pets as, although I love cats, I find people who get over-enthusiastic about animals rather scary. And they usually smell funny and have annoying personal habits. I don't get on with people who try and make me feel guilty for only having one pair of legs. The same goes for what they deem I might be interested in and want to read about.
Straight away, this one seemed different. What caught my eye immediately was the banner "Sex and the Kitty - Partner vs Cat Problems" across the bottom and the spine message which read "Everybody wants to be a cat" so I dived on in.

It was quite obvious from the first page that this was no ordinary pet magazine. It had balls and loads of them. The editorial stated that this was "a cat mag for people who could never picture themselves buying one before" and promised to be fun and funny. It certainly delivers on both accounts and if the first two issues are anything to go by it deserves to be a huge success, even among non cat owners.
There are amongst the usual articles on what's new, and a vet's page etc (and even these are rather more idiosyncratic than the usual), articles on cats in the movies, books, pet websites, a behaviourist and an alternative questions page,"Ask Reuben" ("my cat, Poopsie vomits a lot - What do you expect with a name like that?")
Bruce Vogle, celebrity Mayfair vet, father of the nearly televisually talented bloke from Castaway and husband of Julia Foster, now has a column which gives the mag a certain amount of authority.

First issue features included
articles on the history of cat hatred and 10 reasons not to neuter your cat (illustrated with a picture of a nutcracker and two walnuts. I don't think you'd see that in Catworld). There's also quite a bit of ripe language and a bit of raunch.

Whoever heard of a pet mag you had to hide from the kids?

What on earth were you doing up at 03.24? Is Swindon in a different time-zone?

I might have to look this one up - Blob (my aptly named cat) would love to see it :) Steve
