Advantages: Good stickers
Disadvantages: Some boring bits
Whenever I pick my 3 year old son up for my "shared care" the first words that come out of his mouth are "I missed you Dad: Can we buy a book today". As I haven`t seen him for 7 days at this point I always feel that I have to oblige.
Thus, the last magazine I bought for him happened to be CBeebies weekly.
It looks like all the other pre-school comics with the glossy front cover and bright colours, the unerringly rubbish free gift and the £1.95 to £2.95 price tag.
Let`s look a little closer and see how this book performs.
Price
£1.99. This is at the lower end of the scale for kids mags so this gets a thumbs up from me on that score.
Free Gift
On this occasion 2 Chugginton "racing" trains. This particular issue gets a big thumbs down in this category, the trains are made out of very flimsy plastic and the wheels fell off within 10 minutes. The little devices which were meant to propel the trains did not work period.
Content
CBeebies should score highly here due to the wide range of characters on this channel.Your child gets cameos from Bob the Builder, Grandpa in my Pocket, Timmy the Sheep, Number Jacks and a few more. However the down side to this is that in my son, Ryan`s, case there were uninteresting sections like Bird and Big Cook Little Cook. My score on this is surprisingly low therefore as if I buy Bob the Builder or Fireman Sam, for example, it holds his attention for longer.
Stickers
The all important sticker test! Not bad, I don`t know about other parents but I get frustrated when he asks, "Where does this one go?", and it does not go anywhere, its just a random!!. I`m happy to report every sticker had its rightful place pre-determined!
Over-all
Scores well in 2 falls short in 2 therefore I`d have to give it an average rating to be honest. So 3 out of 5 from me.
Summary: a surprisingly average magazine

- 08/11/09 Awwe, your clever little lad, knows just how to get on the right side of dad. No wonder he is clever, he likes books. Most tots would ask for sweets first.
Lovely review. |
