Advantages: Find out what the best buys are, what to avoid

Disadvantages: none

This magazine is a very valuable tool to have if you are planning to buy a new computer, upgrading or buying a computer peripheral. At £2.99 it’s reasonably priced for this sort of magazine, and includes a cover disc. October’s issue has Lotus Smart Suite worth £374. Okay, it’s an old version - 1997, and I imagine the price is exaggerated for today, but it’s still good for £2.99. Internet Explorer 5.5 is also included, and other useful Internet software and utilities and games. Some of these are demos, some shareware and for some the full product is included.

One of the best things about this magazine is that it is very easy to read and understand, as they do not use jargon. It is aimed at home users and small businesses

The Content includes:

*Letters pages

*New Pages - The latest news in the computer world.

*Articles and reports - these are not just on buying computers on other useful topics such as computer security. While this magazine is mainly a guide to buying, it does include other useful information relevant to computer users.

*Competitions.

*Lab Tests - They test different products and systems and give you the results. You can read brief summaries as well as read detailed information if you want to. The way that the information is presented allows you to easily compare different systems. For example if you are particularly interested in one area, such as expansion, you can easily make comparisons. There are the more detailed pages as well as a table.

*Reviews - of products - hardware and software.

*Step by Step guides. This months - using Excel.

*Ask the Experts

*Upgrade Clinic

*What to buy guide

So, basically it contains loads - not just on computer buying, and while it does have a lot of advertisements, there is a lot more as well. Another good point is that it doesn’t matter if you just buy the one
issue, as it includes a pocket guide which includes everything they reviewed from past issues as well. It’s very easy to use, and tells you at just a glance which are the best products to buy. There is also a guide on how to buy, what precautions you should take, as well as a store finder.

At the moment if you subscribe to the magazine, you also get a free gift -The AA Milemaster CD-ROM worth £49.99. A subsription gives you one years magazines at £19.99(cheque/credit/debit card). Or £4.99 for every three issues (direct debit).
