Advantages: Good reviews, Benefical cover CD, Better than the rest
Disadvantages: Too many ads
With so many computer magazines on the market it is hard to single out one, particular publication. After trialling many computer magazines my loyalty lies with Computer Shopper. Released monthly Computer Shopper has 110,035 readers and currently costs £3.25, although I have a sneaky suspicion the price is to raise soon. The magazine has recently had an editorial makeover and is better than ever. However I must warn you that some computer knowledge is needed to benefit from the magazine. Each month the magazine is accompanied by a cover CD (there are plans to also offer a DVD), this contains many useful applications, for example in the July 2003 edition there was a ‘Collins English Talking Dictionary’ full version. The CD also contains ‘Osmosis’; this is the latest collection of MP3 files from the best-unsigned bands. Each publication boasts around 200 reviews ranging from PCs to games. Each review operates a useful rating system and provides useful information for potential buyers. Also contained are regular features such as ‘News file’, which gives updated news from the world of computers and e-commerce. Particularly useful and popular pages include ‘Helpfile’ and ‘Buying Clinic’ which replies to letters from readers. There is a chance to enter competitions each month, from which I have won items on two separate occasions since subscribing to Computer Shopper. If I was to admit a disadvantage of Computer Shopper it would have to be the number of advertisements, but then again it is titled ‘Computer SHOPPER’. It’s well worth a read.
