Advantages: Good for newcomers, cheap to buy.
Disadvantages: None.
I've been getting ComputerActive almost since it first came out. As I was new to PCs' at the time, I was looking for something that wasn't too technical, and wasn't full of adverts like some of the magazines I ahd bought. ComputerActive wins on both counts. While it isn't as thick as some magazines, it is all articles, no big brochures thickening it up. It is firmly aimed at the beginner, with everything explained in laymans terms, and a "Jargon Buster" column on pages were they couldn't get away without using a technical term. (This explains what the terms mean). It has useful workshops in the centre pages, to give you some practice, and has a very good problem page where you can write in, or email with any questions. They also have a good letters page. (These are the bits I head for when I first get it). Even when you are a bit more experienced, there are still things in it that you didn't know, handy shortcuts and such like. It is also still good just for a read, and to find out about new products in the reviews section. A thoroughly good read, and at £1.20 a fortnight, good value too. If you subscribe, you can get it delivered to your door for the equivalent of 75p an issue. There is also a good web site that has problem areas for advice, reviews, and lots more. This is at: www.computeractive.vnunet.com

lordpercy - 18/10/00 I used to read computeractive and found it a good entry level mag, my only problem was that it never went beyond the basics, but I suppose thats what made it good for newbies! |
