Advantages: jargon busters, very clear, workshops, help pages, lack of ads

Disadvantages: no coverdisc, not for computer savvy people

Do you want to learn about computers? Are computer magasines too difficult to understand, or just too patronising? Sure, you don't know a lot about the beige box in the shop called a PC and the jargon that comes with it, but you're still able to understand a sentence longer than three words! (Turn... Computer... On) Well then, why not try ComputerActive?

There are tutorials explaining how to do a lot of things (therefore there's no need to feel inadequate by getting someone else to do them for you), help pages if you need to ask a question about computers (there's even a bit where readers will solve your problems for you) and "Jargon Busters" throughout the magasine. Computers are reviewed, as well as both hardware and software.

Actually, I do know what I'm doing with computers. I've been using them since the age of about seven. But still, as I read all computer magasines that live near me (or rather those that I pinch off my father when he's not looking), I can give an unbiased perspective of this publication. It's even won an award for clarity, something technophobes will appreciate. There is a severe shortage of ads compared to magasines for the more computer savvy and the price is right (£1.20) because there's no coverdisc.

I would recommend this publication for younger children (give them a helping hand now or they'll be at a seriously disadvantage later), or simply for those who want to read a helpful magasine with a clear style that's as unpatronising as can be. ComputerActive is designed for everyone of all ages who have problems understanding beige boxes. It comes out fortnightly.
