Advantages: Great Fashion And Beauty Advice, Layout
Disadvantages: Needs More Celeb Gossip!
Ok. What’s the deal with this? Two magazines are released on similar days both ending with girl. I’m talking about Elle Girl and Cosmo Girl. Both offspring’s of older fashionable magazines. If you don’t know what they are, they’re Elle and Cosmopolitan. Anyway I bought Cosmo girl a few days after purchasing Elle Girl. I had a good read of it and thought well these magazines are oddly similar but different in some ways. I’m sure the same company makes both magazines. Some adverts appeared on exactly the same pages in both magazines! There is one difference between the two though. Cosmo Girl is a monthly whilst Elle Girl is seasonal thing which definitely gives Cosmo girl more appeal! THE COVER~~ The cover has a picture of Hear’say star Suzanne Shaw, Atomic Kitten’s Natasha Hamilton and Irish star Samantha Mumba. It is quite a plain cover as the background is white but still you don’t really notice that. Cosmo is written in the neat font as cosmopolitan but girl is written a lot funkier to give it a teenage, girly image. It kind of looks like graffiti. There is a huge orange block going across the cover which says ‘mega star first issue!’ which points out its there first issue. Also in the corner its written ‘must keep first issue £1.49’ which actually made me purchase because I wanted to see what the first issue was like. Compared to Elle Girl, there is a lot more information on the content on the cover of the magazine and that big orange block is quite irritating. CONTENTS PAGE~~ The first contents page is quite boring and plain as opposed to Elle Girl. It has an A4 picture of a girl and on top of that the information on the cover stories. The second contents page is a lot more colourful and has headings just like Elle girl. ShopGIRL is mostly about shopping and fashion. It contains celebrity style’s, styles under
£20, and other fashion related articles. InnerGIRL is all about the girl’s inner feelings. True stories, celebrity problems, career quiz and problem pages. CosmoBOY is all about…well guys of course. It has Eminem stickers, boy wallpaper, an 18-year-old guys diary and horoscopes. StyleGIRL is all about fashion, health and beauty. It has stuff like beauty products you cant live without and stylish hairstyles. GIRL on the go is mostly about celebrities and interviews. I really liked the fact that in the corner of the page it had the web contents also. It has different headings and information on what kind of stuff can be found on their official website. Something I don’t usually see in magazines. FASHION~~ The fashion in this magazine begins in the shop girl section, which is all about fashion gossip in the high street and celebrities. They begin with showing celebrity’s hits and misses in the fashion world. They show seven celebrities each wearing either a good outfit or a not so good one. Also in this magazine they show Britney’s Fashion story and in some outfits she doesn’t look so lucky. Just like Elle Girl, Cosmo girl shows you how to get a certain stars look. In this issue its Rachel Stevens from S Club 7. Her personal stylist gives advice on how to get her look. They also have a section on what’s coming to high streets near you. This issue its Mini Skirts. They have sorts. From denim to Stripes. All cat walk copies that should be available in high street stores soon. They show what types of mini skirts are on the catwalk, then what type celebrity’s are wearing then a high street version. The plenty under £20 section was really useful as it showed the rock chick look on a budget. They have tops, jewellery and bags to sneakers. This look isn’t really my kind of thing but its still a cool look for not so much. I really enjoyed the hottest buys on the hi
gh street section. It shows really cool clothing, which is available to buy from high street stores. They have things like colourful tops to the hats that are in fashion, its only one side so it’s not much but its still worth a look. I absolutely loved the fashion week section. It shows how you can buy seven items of clothing and make them last for seven days. It shows how to mix and match items to get whatever look you want, from dates too work. It’s really useful, as I just love to mix and match my outfits. It’s set out like a diary, which, like one day you’re going out on a date, the next you customise your outfit for bowling etc. They also have four extra accessories to add a finishing touch. I am really obsessed with the red cord trousers by Coca Cola Ware, but haven’t a clue where to get them. They do have a number under each item though but I’m not really sure what its for. Might call it if I still can’t find the cord trousers! The pretty Grown up section is really cool in my opinion. It shows really smart clothing, which isn’t too grown up. The clothes still have the teen edge to them but they’re all still really nice. Very useful for a job I’d think. The get our skates on section is more teenage and funkier. The clothes are really cool and definitely for a girly night (or day) out. Just like Elle Girl there is a section on Denim. They have two pages dedicated too Denim Jackets and one page dedicated to jeans. The denim jackets section is really good because they show different styles of denim jackets and what’s in fashion and what isn’t. They have twelve different jackets too choose from. The jeans section is split up in to three different sections. A selection of jeans for tall girls, a selection for sexy girls and a selection for petite girls. HAIR & BEAUTY~~ Fruity beauty is a section for fruity beauty products. It’s a lush section and has s
tuff from fruity lip balms to shower gels. A very nice section. The beauty bag section shows all the musts for a girl’s make up bag. They have things that the stars are wearing to lovely lush perfumes. Also at the bottom of this page there is a little myth of the month, which is quite funny. The hairstyle section was something I enjoyed. They gave a girl a completely new hair do. They even show a little section, which shows Beyonce Knowles hair story. Man that girl has never had a bad hair day has she! Also on the hairstyle page there is a list of 6 of the sexiest hair waxes. Waxes from Nicky Clarke to Wella. The ‘for the awesome some’ article was quite good as it showed what key makeup a girl needs. They showed what products are good such as base, mascara, blusher and lipstick. The power colour/miss sporty promotion was quite good. It’s a quiz to determine what kind of miss sporty make up would suit you and to determine your power. The colours are very cute and it is quite a useful quiz even though its promotional. The cheats guide to perfect skin is an excellent article. It has little paragraphs on how to deal with little skin disasters and how to apply make up. They even have recommended some make up items for different skin tones from fair to dark skin. I am the type of person that is not bothered with leaving her hair open. So I tie it up most of the time. So the article on the perfect pony was brilliant. It shows different styles you can do and what types of ponytails are in fashion. It also shows the type of styles the celebrities are wearing. This article can definitely jazz up any ponytail! HOROSCOPES~~ The horoscopes in Cosmo Girl are really colourful but in my opinion very cluttered. The good thing about the horoscopes is that it has a daily horoscope and a little paragraph for each day. Each star sign doesn’t have a picture to make it unique from the others. The horoscopes are spr
ead out over two pages. I think the horoscopes are really good as they’re a daily thing, but if it weren’t so messy it would be much better. INTERVIEWS~~ The first interview in the magazine is with the three cover girls. Suzanne Shaw, Natasha Hamilton and Samantha Mumba. The interview is really good and even though I can’t stand any of them I still found the article interesting and worth reading. The interview is done in the form of rules. As in there are ten rules a Cosmo girl should live by and they each have there little say about them. They also have a little ‘where do you see yourself in 5, 10, and 20 years’ column and the girls talk about where they think they’ll be. There is another sort of interview with loads of celebrities. Cosmo girl asks them who inspired them to be the best they could be. They ask people like Misteeq, the girls from S Club 7 and the cast of home and away. Another interesting ‘almost’ celebrity’s interview is good. They show four girls and name four bands. These girls almost made into these bands and it’s quite interesting. There is a real life story by Keisha from the Sugababes. She explains how people spread rumours about her in her school, which got her into a lot of trouble. There is also a short interview with the newcomer Jo Breezer. Its quite short but covers a lot of information about her. Also on the same page is a ones to watch article showing artists people should watch out for. There is quite an intimate interview with the former member of the band that is no more. J from five. It’s mostly about what he wears to bed and that sort of stuff. GOSSIP & REVIEWS~~ Gossip is very important to me. I need my fix of celebrity gossip! Toward the end of this magazine there is a section with the latest gossip. Its quite good but needs a lot more gossip to get the thumbs up from me! The Cosmo girl barometer is qu
ite cool because it shows all the stuff that’s in fashion and not in fashion. The reviews were quite good. The magazine reviewed five movies in the cinema and four movies out on video. There are also reviews of television shows too, which are ok but a bit more information may be more useful. The music reviews are really good but like the television show reviews they lack information, but still are quite good. REAL LIFE STORIES~~ There is one main real life story in the whole magazine. It is about how a girl had to deal with a racist attack and how her house was set on fire but how she also managed to save her family. It’s a really touching story and I enjoyed reading it. I really enjoy real life stories and this was a great read. PROBLEM PAGES~~ The problem pages are just like those from any other magazine. You’ve seen the questions all before. There’s a doctor to help with health problems, a counsellor to help with sex/relationship problems and another counsellor to help with life issues. Also readers try to help solve problems also, which is quite good. GUYS~~ In this issue there are quite a few posters to stick up on ya wall! There are eight posters all together. They are of Robbie Williams, Usher Raymond, Dermot O’ Leary, Abs from Five, Ashton Kutcher, Sean William Scott, Simon from Blue and lovely Josh Hartnett. The posters are very nice! Before the posters though there is a little quiz to determine out of these guys you are most likely to end up with. There is an article on how to make your boy mate your boy date, which is quite good. It shows 4 key points on how to make him your date. There’s also an article on an average guy from Newquay. But he is a champion surfer who’s 18. It is basically a diary of what he gets up to. Also free with this issue is a whole page of stickers of the one the only Eminem. There’s a whole page of the
m but since I don’t really like the fella there no use to me. GIVEAWAYS~~ The magazine doesn’t have many giveaways but it has one competition to win £300 worth of study stuff. The pack contains stuff like stationary, backpacks to a portable TV. Its quite a useful pack but not very appealing. Who wants to win study stuff?! Another competition is a £500 voucher for house of Fraser. Something I would LOVE to have!!! There are smaller competitions in the magazine also. PRICE~~ The price of the magazine is brilliant. It costs only £1.49, which is pretty cheap for a teenage magazine. These days they cost at least £2.00 but this magazine had it all for not so much which was very refreshing. I hope this wasn’t just a trial price but it’s still good. There are quite a few pages and for the price it is definitely worth it. ADVERTISEMENTS~~ The magazine seems to have a lot of adverts. The whole magazine has 144 pages 43 of which are all adverts. When reading the magazine it seems like there are so many adverts. It’s a first issue so you can’t really blame them for that. SUBSCRIPTION PRICE~~ For a launch offer the magazine has offered a years subscription for only £8.94, which is amazing. That’s twelve issues. I think that is a great offer and I took it up straight away! WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE~~ This magazine was full of different things but I thought they’re movie, music and television reviews lacked some information, they were good but more information would be better. Also it would be nice to see more celebrity gossip, and maybe more pink and glitter used! OVERALL~~ This magazine was packed with everything I wanted to see. It had little things from celebrity gossip to brilliant fashion and beauty advice. Its great and I know for a fact I will be getting the next issue. I have been very impressed with this fir
st issue and can’t wait to read the next! A great magazine at a great price! I much preferred this magazine to Elle Girl it had similar features but more. (`*·.¸(`*·.¸¸.·*')¸.·*')® «°'¨`·.°BabyGirl°.·'¨`°» (°¸∆.·''(¸.·'''·.¸)` ' ·.∆¸°)
