The Cumberland News is the weekly newspaper for Carlisle and north Cumbria.It is published on a Friday. Most of the news included is from the northern part of the county but it does cover the Penrith area too. (This area has its own weekly paper as well.)

The paper is a broadsheet and costs 47 pence which is expensive for the content. It is also a very 'dirty' paper and tends to make your hands and clothes black with printing ink. (Something to do with the type of ink.)

There are two sections to this newspaper.

Part one covers news from the area which is usually community based and farming news. The farming section is quite big in comparison with the rest. There is a section which carries stories from the rural areas and these are usually to do with whist drives,dances, shows, W.I. and the like.

Section two has a couple of pages of entertainment for the coming week and public notices. There are large motoring and
property sections. The employment section is also in this second part. The back covers sport throughout the area.

This newspaper is not really value for money. The news is mostly a rehash of stories previously printed in the Evening News (same group) and reprints of press releases.

The property section is useful if you are looking for premises or housing in the area. Many of the jobs advertised in the situations vacant column have already appeared in the Evening News during the previous week but there are also new vacancies each Friday morning when the paper appears. It's essential to buy The Cumberland News if you are looking for employment in the area.
