Advantages: Lots of information on goods

Disadvantages: Too much focus on spending money

I arrived in England in March 99 from Australia a dedicated but still novice skier. By around July/August of that year I was itching to get at some European slopes. But which ones, how to get there, and all the other details were unknowns to me.

The obvious answer was to try and get the information. After all, when one is spending hundreds of pounds on a skiing holiday, you want to try and get it reasonably right.

So I went looking for some magazines. I decided that they should have all the latest information and give me a good background when looking at skiing. However I couldn’t find any apart from a few US ones. Eventually around a month or so later I found the Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard Magazine (DMSSM). I quickly discovered the reason for this is that none of the UK Snow sports magazines come out over summer.

Anyhow, I have since also subscribed to “Ski and Board”, and read a few other magazines and so feel well qualified to describe the differences between them.

The DMSSM is owned by the Daily Mail newspaper (a commercial company). As such it does have a commercial inclination in most of its articles and editorials.

However it is not just a commercial advertising magazine. It does have sound articles, and gives reasonable coverage of what you’re facing if you are a skiing/snowboarding addict living in the United Kingdom.

The magazine also gives a good idea of what the flavour is of the various European countries. Each magazine has a reasonably detailed look at one country in the world, and goes through some of the major resorts in that country. However, even here you must be careful. Neither last year’s nor this year’s report on French resorts made mention of Val d’Isere/Tignes. Since this combined resort is one of the best in the world, it makes you wonder if perhaps some commercial arrangements have been made behind the scenes.

What the m
agazine does cover well is spending money. If you are looking for a new set of skis, a snowboard or some boots, somewhere during the year will be an in depth look at all the newest makes and models. As well, there is extensive coverage of all the little add-ons which some people like. You too, can find out where to purchase that essential funny beanie for the coming season.

Unfortunately I don’t particularly like spending money. The one article I would have really appreciated would have been how to get good skiing, whilst paying the least amount of money. So far my waiting has been in vain.

The one other good thing about the DMSSM is that the price is not to bad. Subscribing for 12 issues (2 years) was under £40 when I subscribed. When this is compared to the cost of an average skiing holiday, the additional information that can be gotten from the magazine makes it well worth it.

In conclusion, the DMSSM is a good magazine, which can entertain as well as inform. However it’s strongest points are in the good coverage of pieces of equipment for your skiing holiday.
