Advantages: Covers all aspects of dinghy sailing - no yachts.
Disadvantages: Can be a tad "samey" from month to month, and some recent articles have been weak.
Time for a newer review of Dinghy Sailing Magazine...
DSM, as it likes to be known, is a monthly publication that deals almost specifically with - you've guessed it - dinghy sailing! There have been times when the publication team have been attempting to bring keelboats into it, but fortunately this has never amounted to anything.
There are regular columns from well-respected experts, and plenty of articles that should keep the average dinghy sailor interested. I always look forward to this mag being delivered to me - I subscribe, as it isn't always the easiest magazine to find in the shops.
It contains all sorts of articles about dinghy sailing each month, from racing, tactics, dinghy classes, race reports, cruising and safety boat techniques.
I started reading this magazine as an absolute beginner, when it didn't make an awful lot of sense, but once you have an understanding of what dinghy sailing is about, the articles become much more relevant.
It does provide the beginner with some good articles, but it is admittedly more aimed towards the dedicated club racer.
The closest magazine of this type is Yachts & Yachting (Y&Y), which is now in a monthly format. Y&Y is a better quality magazine, with more in-depth articles, though there are some months when it contains very little dinghy-orientated articles. For that reason, I would recommend DSM to anyone who JUST wants to know about dinghy sailing.
There have been some changes to the publisher of DSM early in 2009, and the magazine's Editorial team have been keeping the mag "afloat" - hopefully it will get itself back on track again soon, as it really is a good publication.
Summary: If you want a mag that only covers dinghy sailing - this is it.
