The BEST magazine for card making
Member Name: NickyBo
Advantages: Great projects, good free gifts, few adverts
Disadvantages: Only comes out bi-monthly
I have just bought the newest magazine from Docrafts and thought it was about time I wrote a review about it.
Docrafts Creativity is a craft magazine, primarily focusing on cardmaking but also featuring scrapbooking, jewellery making and other paper crafts.
The magazine comes out bi-monthly and it currently costs £2.50. It used to only cost £1 but the magazine seems to have recently doubled in size and therefore the price has been increased. To some it seems to be a big hike in price however I think it is justified as so much more work seems to be going into the magazine now. Most other card making magazines cost around £3.99 so this is still the cheapest one I have found and, in my opinion, it is still the best.
The magazine is made by Docrafts, a company that makes many different craft products such as card blanks, stickers, ribbons etc. As a result it features many of the Docrafts crafting products. The first few pages of the magazine always seem to be dedicated to introducing new products that Docrafts have brought out. However, this is not done like an advertisement but rather like an informing article telling you all about the new products and how much they cost. I like these pages as I love trying new craft goodies and these pages are far more interesting than endless adverts.
After the new products section there are many different articles giving inspiration and ideas for card making as well as scrapbooking and occasionally other crafts. These articles contain many big, colourful photos showing the cards they have designed in good detail. This is really important as if you want to copy the design it really helps to be able to see it clearly! Each card then has instructions for how to make it. These instructions are clear but I personally would find it easier to read if they were done in a step-by-step way using bullet points or numbers.
The projects vary in difficulty so there will be plenty that people new to crafting could try, but also enough to keep more accomplished crafters happy.
At the end of each article is a categorised product list giving the item product code and the price. I especially like the fact that it gives the price. Many times I have seen something in other magazines and it gives no idea of the price however Creativity always does and it actually makes me more likely to buy the product as I see straight away that it is a reasonable price.
One of my favourite sections in the magazine is the 'Quick makes' part. It features around 10 projects (usually cards) that can be made very quickly. I don't get much time for my hobbies so I find this section a really good way to maximise what I can make in what little time I have.
Another big feature of Creativity magazine is the free cover gift given away with every issue. These gifts are always of a high quality and are a very good way to try out different products. The free gifts are very often samples of new products that Docrafts are releasing. The free gift with the magazine I just bought was a set of three border stamps. Previous gifts have included sticky ribbon, peel offs, rubber stamps, stickers and fabric flowers.
One final thing to notice about this magazine is the distinct lack of adverts. Although there are a couple, there are nowhere near as many as in the other card making magazines. I think this is because Docrafts make their own range of card making products and therefore they are advertising those by using them in their projects. However, this is subtle advertising and is done in an interesting way that actually informs and helps the reader. Much better than 1/3 of the magazine being taken over by full page adverts.
In conclusion, I really would recommend this magazine to anyone interested in card making. I feel it is very good value for money and provides me with lots of inspiration. I also really like the good quality free gift! I just wish the magazine came out monthly instead of bi-monthly as it seems to take too long until the new one!
Summary: Highly recommended for card makers
