Advantages: Interesting , varied, colourful magazine.
Disadvantages: You have to like dogs!
I am very lucky that a generous friend at work passes on all of her dog magazines to me once she has read them. So, Dogs Today is a magazine I read every month, although often rather late.
The magazine always contains plenty to read, whether you are a real dog fanatic or just have a passing interest. There are several big features in each magazine. For example, in the May issue there were features on the large number of Staffordshire Bull Terriers that are being abandoned, dancing with dogs, dogs with their own blogs, and an investigation into some of the less reputable dog rescue schemes. There is plenty of advice on different topics, e.g breeding, housetraining, weight, exercise, and behaviour. Readers can write in with queries to be answered in the magazine. There are sections for readers' letters, book reviews, new doggy products, and competitions. Regular writers for the magazine include Bruce Fogle. Usually there is an in-depth look at one particular breed to give potential owners an idea of what it's like to live with that type of dog. In the May issue the breed was the Lowchen. At the back of the magazine is an A to Z of breeds with brief facts on each.
There are lots of photographs throughout the magazine which make it very easy and enjoyable to flick through. I always learn new things from the articles and often cut out one or two to keep if I find them especially interesting. Dogs Today do produce a binder which you can send off for if you want to keep the whole issue filed away for future reference.
Apart from the variety of articles and information in the magazine, what I like is the strong emphasis on animal welfare. Everyone who writes for the magazine gives the impression of having a genuine love of dogs. Their enthusiasm really comes across. When there are case studies, for example looking at a dog with a behavioural problem, the dog's needs are always considered thoroughly. The attitude is always that if you take on a dog (or any other animal) you should be prepared to give it the best conditions for it to be happy and secure. The magazine really encourages responsible dog ownership.
If you don't have a generous friend like mine to give you their old copies of Dogs Today, you can buy it in WH Smith for £3.50. I am just looking at the subscription cost and for a year as a new subscriber you would pay £30 so that's quite a good saving plus you would have the convenience of the magazine being delivered to your door.
