Advantages: Its ok a few good ideas
Disadvantages: ?
My garden is a bit of a nightmare after the summer so thought I wanted some easy gardening tips,
I borrowed the August copy of Easy gardening from our local library. To buy this BBC magazine from newsagents cost £ 2. 30.
Easy gardening magazine is published 10 times a year, not sure which months there is not a copy printed,
The magazine is 98 pages long with bright glossy pictures to accompany the text.
The last few weeks I have been helping friends and my daughter pick and consume their abundance of plums, I notice the first article in the magazine is about tasks to do this month, top of the list, its time to pick your plums, This page also tells you of other tasks to do during August and about watering with “grey water.
The magazine tells you to keep picking runner beans young to encourage new ones to grow, yes some helpful tips in this section
There are plenty of adverts in this magazine for gardening tools, seed merchants and a gross picture of a slug advertising slug pellets.
There is a quick make article , this month its about cane toppers ,yes I have been poked in the face by a cane when gardening when I forgot it was there ,maybe if I had one of these cane toppers It would not have happened to me .
There is an Issue special this month it’s about summer evenings. Scented plants and lighting are highlighted telling you which plants are scented and how to grow them. This article talks about safety in lighting your garden and lighting options and good positions for lights.
There are a couple of pages about easy border planting, a list of plants and a little about them, tips and hints on planting.
The next section Real gardens is an article about someone’s garden, don’t we all love to see what someone else has done with their garden,
There is a 2 page article about the winner of the gardener of the year’s garden this is in Wendover not far from me.
There is a watching wildlife page or two, this month concentrating on moths, how to tell if it’s a moth or a butterfly with pictures of 10 common garden moths, most of which I see in our garden. I must get the moth trap out one evening .( if you have not got one sugaring works fairly well dissolve some sugar in water paint it on a log the moths will be attracted by the sweetness.)
There is a 3 page article about someone’s pond, I love ponds they are important in a wildlife garden and are a draw to animals and humans alike. I love watching the wildlife by my pond (no fish in my pond).
Next article about flowers and pots and containers which plants are easy to grow in pots.
Then an article about improving your existing garden about designing your garden with Diarmuid Gavin.
An article about a black and white colour scheme in the garden not sure I really like that idea I like lots of colour.
Then an article about sculpture in the garden no not a concrete maiden or fairy from the garden centre, but how to make a sculpture from junk.
Now we get to the part of the magazine about fruit and veg, chillies, gooseberries and carrots, are featured, good there are some tips about pruning, must do mine.
Adam Pasco is featured this month; I guess they feature different people in each edition of this magazine.
The magazine finishes with a tips and advice section, A your letters section.
Then there is a word search to keep your brain active and lots of small adds of the gardening variety, yes its time to order that seed catalogue for next years garden plants.
Overall I enjoyed reading this magazine it has a Clear layout and east to read format, anyway it’s stopped raining now lots of tasks to do in the garden.

- 02/09/06 Always hard to review magazines, I feel, and going by one issue isn't always ideal. What you've written is enjoyable, though - good luck with your garden (and if you want to do mine, that'd be fine, too ;)) |

- 30/08/06 My difficulty is that reading is one thing, getting out there and gardening is quite another when time is short, nice review, Sue |
