Advantages: Intelligent, thoughtful writing.

Disadvantages: A touch pricey (but reasonable subscription rates)

Too many magazines assume people who play games are kids. Despite the average age of gamers being over 21 and continuing to rise, most magazines talk down to you, use exclamation marks like they will soon be taken off their keyboards, and seem happy to write crappy simplistic reviews. And don't even get me started on single format mags - especially the acursed official ones. This is one mag you don't feel embarassed to be seen reading in public!

A welcome relief from the generally poor standard of games journalism is provided by Edge (and it's Future Publishing stablemate Arcade). Edge is a very professional looking publication, printed on lovely paper and basically looking like it means to be taken seriously. It's a bit pricey (currently a whopping £3.80 an issue) but you get what you pay for, professional journalist who know what they are talking about and have plenty of industry contacts, rather than a bunch of kids just out of college who think it's so cool they get paid to play games. As such it features plenty of interviews with developers, for example it recently interviewed the 9 newly independant Sega divisions. The reviews are very well written, with very pretty screenshots and an eye for detail and more importantly, depth.

If you are fed up with being patronised by crap like the Playstation mags, and don't want the whole biased "our machine's the best, all other systems are crap" rubbish you get with most single format mags, then either Edge or Arcade are the ones to go for. Edge is a little more cerebral, Arcade is great fun, the choice is yours. Me, I've got a subscription to them both!

Edge is of amazing quality and and thats why the price is so steep. It is very informative and I think that is isn't really for teens/kids, but I am interested in the whole industry of gaming itself as well as just games, and thats why I buy Edge at the age of 15. I'd like to hear your comments on the Xbox, goto http://www.geocities.com/ msxbox_uk/ and sign the guestbook plz.
