Advantages: Layout, Fashion, Shopping

Disadvantages: Few Things Missing

For about three years I bought J-17, which I now cant, stand! I then started to read ‘Sugar’ magazine, which covered the basics, you know music, movies, fashion, guys, beauty did I mention guys?! Anyway after a while I just started to get bored of ‘Sugar’ it just didn’t satisfy me any longer. I needed a magazine with more fashion and beauty tips so I decided to buy Vogue, which cost me £3.20 per issue, a little expensive but hey its pretty thick. It was jam packed with fashion and beauty information but then déjà vu this magazine didn’t satisfy a teen like me. I needed something in between but nothing really existed like that. Until now.

God I’m so picky when it comes to magazines. I need something that will cover loads of fashion, lots of useful beauty tips, movie and music reviews, celebrity gossip and guys…

I went shopping with a mate and she decided to buy a magazine, she was about to purchase ‘Sugar’ until I noticed something new. A magazine called ‘Elle Girl’. It had Britney Spears (Yawn) on the cover and looked quite interesting. We realised this was the famous magazine Elle’s little sister. One made just for the teens. It said first issue on the cover so I decided to get it while my friend decided to get another new magazine called ‘Cosmo Girl’ (expect an op on that). Anyway it came with a free gift so I was quite impressed and I hadn’t even opened it yet. Anyway as soon as I got home I took it out of its packet and started to read the contents and I was pleasantly surprised.

COVER~~

The cover is quite attractive (even though Britney is on it *joke*). The font that is used to write ‘GIRL’ is quite funky and it’s pink so it caught my attention! The cover didn’t have annoying pictures like a lot of other magazines, which was quite good. The cover the magazine came in was quite neat and it said ‘Free
Elle Girl Vest’ and also had a picture of two girls wearing the top that is the free gift. I noticed that there isn’t much writing on the cover and I noticed it was all slanted which was pretty different to other magazine. The motto of this magazine is ‘for girls who love to shop’ well I guess that’s definitely me then (and moose!!).

CONTENTS PAGE~~

I found the contents page very helpful. It was neat and very colourful. It had five different headings. Which were Girl Talk, Star Girl, Real Girl, Pretty Girl and Girl World. Everything is set out quite neatly and it is very easy to read. The images used on the contents page are very chic and they look very cool on the page, nicely set out.

IT’S A GIRLS WORLD~~

Everything is set out in five sections and here’s some information on each section.
Girl Talk is well…girl talk. It has fashion advice, mini interviews, shopping and other girl talk.
Star Girl is all about famous girls, such as the cover girl Britney Spears, Thora Birch, Heather Matarazzo and Sugababes. It focuses more on the famous girl.
Real Girl about the average girl, you know the girl on the street. It has makeovers and a few stories. Also has a quiz.
Pretty Girl focuses on fashion and all things shopping. It has beauty tips and stuff like that.
Girl world is mainly on all things girly. Such as keeping fit, bad skin, bedroom makeovers and kissing practices *hehe*.

FASHION~~

I have to say I was so impressed with the fashion advice from this magazine. There was a lot of trendy clothing featured in this magazine. One thing I really liked was how to get the music star Eve’s style. They showed a lot of clothing similar to her designer gear, which was useful for broke students. Also the ‘can a t-shirt change the world’ article was really good. It had a selection of t-shirts that were made for charity but were really fashi
onable too. I think that was great as it encourages younger people to go out and buy these tees and support these charities.

The vest that came free with the magazine comes in two different colours and the magazine also has tips on how to customize is too make it your own unique style. Also they had an article on how to make cool, unique accessories.

They also had a section on shoes and what was in fashion when it comes to fancy footwear. Since I have a fetish for shoes I loved that section!

I love fashion makeovers and this magazine gave a fashion makeover to five girls from Manchester. It was cool because their image was transformed. All from being average too looking like a rebel, disco, designer, trendy and vintage divas. Giving five different looks in one article. Out of all the looks I definitely preferred the designer look because its just so me.

I definitely loved the ‘how to de-parent your party clothes’ which is very useful if your parents don’t approve of that tiny mini skirt. Elle girls international was quite interesting too as it showed different styles from London, Tokyo and New York. All three have quite different styles compared to each other which is good cause ive always loved the Japanese style.

The fashion pages were quite good with clothes that are definitely in style but not my cup of tea but all the other fashion articles definitely make up for that. The leg warmers fashion section was a bit too 80’s stylee for me but still very retro. I love the ‘I love denim’ section. It has a selection of fashionable jeans from different stores and also denim jackets and skirts. It is quite useful as denim goes in and out of fashion but it really does shoe what type of denim is in fashion and what styles to go for. They even have a denim accessories section showing things like denim bags, belts, shoes and headscarf’s. Definitely the best denim fashion article ive ev
er read!

I liked the wish list section as it focused on pretty little things girl’s want! Stuff like pink Nike trainers and a hello kitty Gucci stylee hand bag and purse which is just so adorable! There was an article on sites on the Internet, which are quite fashionable and have good products for teenage girls.

There was also a section on the Sugababes and how to get their style. It showed what kind of style members of the band had and where they mostly shopped. The fashion quiz was quite interesting too as it told you what kind of fashion girl you are. The camping section was very cool. It showed what sort of things you should use for when you go camping and how to be fashionable at the same time. Quite a shock you can camp and be chic at the same time!

HAIR & BEAUTY~~

This magazine has a lot of tips and articles on hair and beauty, which every teen (or most anyway) needs advice on. There is a whole article on how to get straight, sleek and curly hair. It shows what sort of products would be useful for what kind of hair plus what style would suit that kind of hair. I really liked the advice that was given and it had loads of styles to choose from which was cool.
The pink make-up section was really helpful for people with different coloured skin. It has pinks that would suit white, olive and dark skin which I must say was very helpful because many of my olive skin friends can’t find pinks that actually suit them. There was a good section on what make up is good for what style. Such as summery, casual and partying. They tested, Stila, Clinique, the body shop and MAC. I really liked the paint by numbers section as it focused on colourful make up which has a pop art effect. Make up artist Ruby Hammer (Ruby and Millie) wrote an article on how to get rid of spots or at least how to hide them, I found the article very good and useful. She recommended different products for different skin types.

INTERVIEWS~~ <
br>
<br>In this magazine the main interview is with Britney Spears. Even though I am not a fan I still enjoyed the article. She talked about fashion, shopping, life, and Justin. They even had a little section on her fashion hits and mistakes. There was also a tiny interview with Buffy and American pie star Alyson Hannigan. It wasn’t very long but quite interesting. She mostly talks about fashion, shopping and acting. But it isn’t very long. There is also a similar interview with Heather Matarazzo. She mostly talks about acting and life. If you haven’t heard of her, she was in welcome to the dollhouse and had a minor role in scream 3.

GUYS~~

Ok well I bet your thinking, why the hell has she written a section about the guys in the magazine, well its my opinion so I don’t need a reason! There’s a section in the magazine that compares Hollywood actors with your real life boyfriend and which one their most likely to be like. I was glad because my favourites Josh Jackson and Josh Hartnett are in it! *SWOON*! It also featured Paul Walker, Wes Bentley and Brad Renfro, not enough if you ask me!

FREE GIFT~~

The magazine came with a free pink/black vest which read ‘GIRL’ on the front and ‘Elle’ at the back. It isn’t made of very high quality but then again it is only a free gift. It comes in one very petite size, which I doubt anybody would wear on the street cause it has the ‘free with a magazine’ look to it. I didn’t bother trying it on, I just gave it to my 3 year old niece to wear as nightwear. And it did fit her perfectly. It is tight. Get the picture.

HOROSCOPES~~

This section of the magazine is quite cool. The layout of the horoscope page is really neat and the pictures are cute and different to most pictures on an ordinary horoscope page. I really like the fact that it tells you what style of clothing you should wear for the mon
th, even recommends certain items and what store to get them from. Although I don’t agree with Aquarians star style. A studded spandex bikini bra. So me! Quite lighthearted predictions for the whole month. It isn’t set out in a day-by-day style but one paragraph for the whole month. I do think they are quite short but do manage to get the message across in one short paragraph which is good.

CARTOON COMIC~~

I absolutely love comics. One thing that doesn’t come in any other teen magazine. I remember in the old issues of magazine you would find the odd story, which was cool, but this cartoon comic seems excellent. Its called Ellie Girl Intern, and is about three different gals living it large. The characters are Ellie – the Drew Barrymore look-alike. Then there’s flirty Kirsten – Kate Hudson’s double, and last but not least Stella who looks like a cartoon version of Thora Birch. It’s quite fun and light hearted, something I will definitely look forward to when I read this magazine.

GIVEAWAYS~~

Giveaways from this magazine are pretty cool and very girly. They give away £50 worth of Clinique products, £16 worth of Bourjois products, Vivienne Westwood Perfume worth £56, Maybelline goody bags wroth £20, Bonne Bell lip shimmer and Mikey hair accessories worth £20, Billy Bags worth £110, Buffy box sets worth £40, Toby Pimlico Tee shirts worth £40 and an Elle Girl set worth £30. I think the giveaways are pretty good and I don’t usually see teenage magazines giving away Clinique products or Vivienne Westwood perfume, usually see clean and clear giveaways.

ADVERTS~~

This magazine has quite a few adverts, which is a downside. There are 22 adverts in the magazine altogether, which is quite a lot when reading it. But then again it is only the first issue. The magazine has 133 pages so it doesn’t really seem like much. I noticed though most of the adverts you would no
t expect to find in normal teenage magazines such as sugar. You’d be more likely to see them in Elle magazine. As soon as you open the magazine it’s a skechers advert with the cover girl Britney Spears on it! The adverts would appeal to teenagers but some adverts are quite interesting, as I haven’t seen them in any other magazine.

PRICE~~

I thought the price of the magazine was ok but for a first issue nothing special. It cost £2.20, which is pretty expensive for a teenager. It has loads of fashion advice and beauty tips so I guess it’s worth it. For a first issue I think it’s really good, first issues are usually dry and lack a lot of things but this had loads of stuff!

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TOO SEE~~

OK its only the first issue but hey… problem pages were missing but then again who would write in on the first issue, maybe they’ll have them next week but I don’t recall seeing an address to write to for advice. I didn’t see any gossip on celebs, which was a big let down. I know there were interviews but I want to know whom Penelope Cruz is dating now (sorry Penelope fans). Is that so much to ask?

OVERALL~~

I thought this magazine was great. It’s got a mixture of Sugar/Bliss and Elle. Its good for a first issue but there were things missing which was a bit of a downside. I will definitely get the next issue and will update on that if it’s better or worse.

Oh btw if you were wondering what I was on about with Britney’s nipple. Buy the magazine or go to a newsagent and look on the cover. Hey I didn’t notice it! My MALE cousin did!! Gross!
