Advantages: Good balance of high-end and high-street

Disadvantages: Lots of ads

As with all magazines it depends what you're after as to how you're going to rate it. Elle ticks all the boxes for me. Of all the glossy fashion mags it is the only one that manages to strike a good balance between high-end designer and high street clothes and beauty products. You will be able to afford half the things in it and the other half are just there for lusting after. And all for only £3.50 a month.
There tends to be one celebrity feature but other than that, if it's celebrity gossip you're after, you would be better off with a weekly like Look or Grazia. Regular features include high-street must haves, designer of the month and 10 rules of style according to a different celebrity each month.
One thing that may put people off is the sheer weight of the ads. It depends whether you like looking at new season Gucci or D&G? Despite that though, it's an easy read and offers practical advice on how to work the new trends coming from the catwalk.

Summary: Worth a subscription to save you some pennies
