Advantages: Up to date fashion news, decent free gifts

Disadvantages: Too many adverts and pictures, not enough words

It is quite difficult to write a review about a magazine unless you buy it on a regular basis as, generally, there are variations between issues and it wouldn’t be fair to write a review based on one very good (or very bad) issue of a publication.

From the rating that I have given this particular magazine, you may wonder why I continue to buy it as I so obviously do not seem to like it. However, I received a yearly subscription as a present for Christmas last year along with an exclusive subscription give containing Liz Earle cosmetics. Who is Liz Earle I hear you ask, well if you read Elle then you may know!

Elle is a typical glossy magazine which rates the latest fashions, beauty products and celebrity style. The beauty pages do not feature products from your local Boots or Superdrug but highlight the best beauty buys from the premier ranges.

In the same way, the fashion pages showcase the latest designer fashions from the leading fashion houses. Sometimes they do feature items that are available on the high street but a lot of the time the clothes are straight off the catwalk and only available in large stores in places like London. If this is the kind of thing that you are interested then you may just have found your perfect read.

However, Elle has a distinct lack of decent articles both serious and ridiculous as most pages are taken up with adverts or pictures of models. There is rarely any substance to the magazine in the form of relevant women’s articles, celebrity interviews or even those daft personality quizzes that everyone moans about.

On the other hand, perhaps I am being a bit harsh as nowhere has Elle claimed to be a magazine for the serious reader looking for "life or death" stories or campaigns on women’s issues. Elle is a fashion and beauty magazine and doesn’t pretend to be anything else. In this respect, it does its job very well as it is the perfect place to f
ind out about the latest styles and the hottest lipstick colour. They also offer pretty decent free gifts.

However, if you are looking for a substantial read then I would probably avoid this magazine as you may be quite disappointed as it contains more pictures and adverts than anything else.

Not my kind of magazine but then, different people have different tastes...
