Empire magazine - does the job perfectly (511 words)
by - written on 30/09/08 (Very useful, 730 readings)
Rating:

If you have read any of my other reviews, you'll notice that most of them are film-related. I do like films! Nearly a year ago, I won a competition and the prize was a year's subscription to Empire magazine. I usually buy it anyway, so I was very happy to have won this. Over the past year, I have patiently waited each month for the latest copy to plop through the letterbox onto my floor, and then eagerly sit down with a cup of copy and plan what films I'm going to watch next. Empire magazine has been in circulation since 1989, and is considered the best film magazine out there. It centres on new releases and those 'under the radar' films that may pass you buy, ...  Read the complete review

Movie Mania! (655 words)
by - written on 15/10/04, updated on  23/10/04 (Very useful, 79 readings)
Rating:

I'm a bit of a movie fan. I like to go to the cinema at least once a week, although I've been known to go three or four times in one week, which is actually really rather unhealthy now I come to think of it! I should consider getting out more in all honesty. So, let's face it...the one movie magazine that comes to your head before all others is Empire, of course, and as a wannabe movie mogul, you bet I've forked out my money for it on more than one occassion. For a start, it doesn't come in particularly cheap, at £3.10 an issue, although it is quite a weighty volume (the December 2003 copy that I've got in front of me right now has over 200 pages), ...  Read the complete review

Empire: The best available film magazine (594 words)
by - written on 10/05/02, updated on  10/05/02 (Very useful, 137 readings)
Rating:

I have been buying Empire magazine for around six years now, and for the last four I haven’t missed an issue. I have tried pretty much every other film magazine available, even bought a couple (such as Total Film) fairly regularly for a while. But I always come back to Empire simply because, in my eyes at least, they are the most reliable source for reviews and news available. Empire is produced in Britain for a British audience (lists UK release dates etc.). It is a monthly magazine, and currently costs £3.00. For you money you get approximately 160 pages, which consists of the following sections: First look: Photos and information about ...  Read the complete review

Defies to be beaten (1233 words)
by - written on 29/06/01, updated on  29/06/01 (Very useful, 63 readings)
Rating:

Several face-lifts, various price hikes and an ongoing turnover of editors and yet Empire goes from strength to strength. Lets forget that it is Britains leading movie magazine with circulation figures growing every year; that it is one of the few magazines to hold its own award ceremony annually, pulling in more than just the bowels of D list movie stars; that it offers most film news first and provides the most comprehensive list of reviews from films on release. The bottom line is that as film magazines go, nothing has the all encompassing approach and scope of Empire. That coveted first editions of the magazine have been sold for over £150-00 says ...  Read the complete review

Empire - the market leader (305 words)
by - written on 22/11/00, updated on  22/11/00 (Very useful, 26 readings)
Rating:

This is the big glossy market leader in the movie mag sector. I have been reading Empire for well over five years and have noticed many changes along the way - most to the better. The printed media in this genre tend to be formulaic in their presentation, i.e. letters page, film reviews (of course) and star interviews. Empire has been able to maintain its individualism and stylistic content in the face of every changing movie industry. The magazine has kept up with the advances in technology, with articles on the web, new film formats and has a very important web presence. In a recent re-vamp, Empire has recognised the important changes in public demand and has ...  Read the complete review
