Eve cleverly describes itself as the smarter woman's read. Smart is one of those deliciously ambiguous words which can mean well groomed and fashionable or quick witted and clever or perhaps both. I am sure I am not alone in aspiring to smartdom however defined and reading Eve is bound to help isn't it? But who are these smarter women Eve is targeting? In the June magazine Eve has given awards to what they consider to be the 20 smartest women in Britain, these are described as women who are out to change the world, perhaps following the footsteps of a certain eponymous heroine? "They are inspirational, not only for their jaw dropping ... Read the complete review

I'll start off by saying i'm not a huge fan of "women's" magazines, so those who think they are a sacred fount of all knowledge might want to trot on somewhere else! However, Eve in my opinion is better than many - for those who've realised that there's more to life than orgasms and therefore moved on from Cosmopolitan, but for whom Marie Claire is too heavy to carry around. So, what is the world according to Eve like? Well, pretty much all the women are either a) busy with a glamorous and / or ethically worthwhile career, carried out whilst looking a million dollars in the latest style, or b) producing hordes of photogenic offspring whilst starting ... I like this magazine - it's glossy, but has more substance to it than the usual women's magazine It's from the BBC, so you assume it's trying to educate, slightly anyway, and the tone reminds me of the quality Sunday papers. But there is certainly a sense of humour there too, a touch of irreverence - for example, an article on thrush (infection) with illustrations of thrushes (birds). It's packed with features: food; health section with genuinely useful information; gardening; house-y type things. There are fairly serious articles e.g. one on the bionic man (with an artificial limb) and one on global threats like pollution and GM food. ... Read the complete review

Lately I get the feeling I'm getting old before my time. All the sex tips in the other magazines just seem to be the same old thing and when i look at some of the backless frontless bottomless dresses advertised I just wonder how the heck women wear them without freezing. I began to long for a magazine with some real meaty content. And what do you know, I found it. Eve is a marvelous piece of work. Finally intelligent and interesting articles on things ranging from the everyday (are we having too many periods?) to the slightly more bizarre (strange article on an enema holiday... well you had to be there I guess) all of them intriguing and good fun to read. It was ... Read the complete review

I used to be a very fickle magazine reader, going by the best cover and having no particular loyalty. All that changed a few months ago when I discovered Eve - I've bought every issue since! Having got a bit fed up with the sex-with-everything slant of Cosmo et al, and not quite ready for the knitting pattern end of the magazine market, I was really pleased to discover Eve, a mix of frivolous and serious articles, with a healthy (but not too heavy) dose of fashion and beauty (I normally don't read these sections in the other glossies!!). Examples of main feature articles in the April 2001 issue are "Stories the world forgot" (2 years after ... Read the complete review
