Advantages: Bright and glossy, light reading
Disadvantages: Minimal original content
FHM has stagnated over the last few years. Having read the magazine since mid 1994, when it was basically a slightly lighter version and monthly to boot of the then quarterly GQ, I have seen most of the articles at least once before. Whilst I understand that some things e.g. holiday info etc. do change and resorts come into fashion and similarly go out of fashion, there are only so many articles that can be regurgitated. Part of the problem is that I also read other magazines, and of course there is an overlap in terms of content between various magazines, so it is becoming ever harder to actually write something original, or at least that is what the authors might have us try and believe. Whilst a copy of FHM is always good for a boring train journey, and for taking your mind off a trip to the doctors (I left the medical centre at Uni with the previous year's issues for the waiting room, although I don't know if they were allowed to put them out!), the actually factual content that is original is very low. FHM has spawned offspring - FHM Bionic and FHM Fashion, yet still has sections in the main magazine that cover similar content. At least they don't do the GQ favourite of starting an article and getting to one page from the end and then banishing the last page to the back of the magazine amidst the credits. If you want a lads mag, then you can't go too far wrong, but after a while the content is boring, repetitive and there is only so much eye candy that a better half will permit you to look at. The girls are also all pretty samey, and the interviews very shallow (perhaps this is a reflection on the model in question, or the magazine's readership). Overall I would not recommend FHM on a regular basis any longer, although for the occasional read it is still worth it, even if you are left with a feeling of having read it all before.
