Advantages: makes a great doorstop, some good content if you can find it
Disadvantages: adverts advert adverts
I think the amount of adverts in magazines such as FHM is rediculous. Starting at the front cover you can flick through up to 30 pages of adverts before getting to the first article. It may seem like you are getting a lot for your money when you pick up the hefty tome from the newsagents shelf, but the majority of it is advertising.
These magazines are not cheap either, you would think with all their advertising revenue they could lower the cover price. Many internet services, local papers, tv channels etc are provided free of charge - they can do this due to the amount of money made from advertising. Why then do publishers fill their magazines with advertisements AND charge us extortionate amounts for them?
One ploy that also annoys me is the 'put it in a bag' trick - trying to make you think there is something really great in there, it's just to stop you seeing how many adverts there are beore you buy it.
Then there are the 'advertorials' - make an advert look like an article, so the magazine gives the impression of actually having some real content, while conning it's readers into viewing adverts. Great!
