Advantages: An easy read, a fun magazine.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive, sometimes childish.
This has been the subject of a long debate between myself and my male aquaintances. Lad's Mags:Degrading to women, or simply a bit of fun? Just to clarify, I consider FHM, Loaded, Arena, and all those other thick glossy soft-porn fests as Lad's Mags. Am I merely yet another feminist kinda chick, or do I have a point? Let's consider the following: IN FAVOUR OF LAD'S MAGS As I am not a "lad", one could say I have a biased opinion on this subject. However, I can (kind of) see the "entertainment" of these types of magazines, including the scantily-clad women, and the whole humorous side to it all. Recent stars in FHM (I flicked through my brother's mag) have included Shakira, the Hollyoaks chicks and Rachel Stevens of S Club 7, who's a regular. I suppose I can see the attraction here! All these women (and others) are attractive, and we all know that lads like to get a good look at their bodies and the like. Ok, fair enough, I say. After all, any girl who has read More will be familiar with the centrefold male model pic. In addition, I'd also like to add that the true stories are often quite amusing in FHM, and I have a good laugh reading them. On the other hand... AGAINST LAD'S MAGS Is it degrading to women? Hmm, a tricky one. Obviously, they must earn quite a large sum of money for stripping off like that. So I'm sure they're not complaining! However, are these women degrading themselves? Ok, it's their choice at the end of the day, but whatever happened to Girl Power? I'm going to contradict myself here, and say that if I was offered loads of money to prance around and pose in my underwear, I'd do it. Perhaps these girls even get a kick out of knowing that men admire them, and women aspire to them? Probably. As you can see, I'm a bit confused about this one. Although I think they are degrading, childish and stupid sometimes, I am partly i
n favour of Lad's Mags: They are funny, easy to read, and offer lovely pics of lovely ladies! I'd be interested to know where other females stand on this, and whether any boys/men are against the idea.

- 25/04/02 My girlfriend much prefers FHM to her girlie mags like Cosmo, she says it's much funnier.
Inciden tally, FHM, Loaded and so on don't come under the heading of soft porn. Soft porn is magazines like Men's World, Mayfair and Club... |

- 08/04/02 I actually prefer some of the lads mags, as they have more interesting articles and less fashion and fewer adverts. |

- 08/04/02 My boyf occasionally gets FHM and it really is quite tame. I agree with Muffin the Mule - some of the female magazines I get are much worse. |
