Advantages: Unbiased Reviews, covers all formats
Disadvantages: Slightly Immature writing style
I have been reading Games Master magazine on and off since way back in 1993 when it was developed to accompany the TV show of the same name. Back when I was barely a teenager, it was the show to watch, presented by Dominic Diamond, with Patrick Moore as the Games Master. It was where you would find out all the latest news for your Nintendo NES or SEGA Mega Drive.....
Luckily the magazine has outlasted the TV show, and computer games are no longer the size of house bricks (okay I exaggerate but not by much). The magazine has continued to evolve with the times and has gone on to become the best selling Multi format games magazine in the UK. As a household that has a variety of games consoles it is great to be able to pick up one magazine and see all the new games available across the board, rather than buying one of the many computer magazines that specialise only in one system. The XBOX 360, PS3, PS", PSP, Wii, DS and PC.
The Magazine features all the up coming games, new releases, plus tips for your current games. I particularly like the way they rate the future releases on how hotly anticipated they are. I tend to find that I agree with most of their ratings and reviews, which is probably why I have been loyal to them for so many years!! They tend to have a couple of big reviews each month, and then several pages with a couple of reviews to a page.
Every month you get a free tips book, which features over 5000 tips for several hundred games across all consoles. They are great for keeping in your computer drawer for when you get stuck on a game. Having these books as a free gift instead of a more costly demo DVD means that Games Master magazine is one of the cheapest available.
I do believe I am getting a bit to old for this magazine, as I find myself reading less and less of it each month!! Looking at the photo staff list the writers seem to be getting younger and younger - although I think it is probably me getting older!! The Style of writing although amusing is quite juvenile, and I tend to just read the bullet points and the score. However this is representative of its audience, which from reading the letters page seem to have an average age of 14 (scarily, the age I was when I started reading) However, if all you want it for is a nosy at future and current games releases then it does the job more than adequately.
Games Master is published monthly for £3.99, and issue 212 is available now from all good newsagents.
Summary: Game Guide whatever games machine you have...

- 14/05/09 I find most magazines I read now are dumbed down to a level I am sure I would have found appalling when I was a teenager...LOL! |
