Advantages: Witty and lots of content
Disadvantages: Can't cover every single game
GamesMaster has been around a long time, more than 8 years, I believe. In that time it has improved immensely. Whereas before it used to be quite foul-mouthed and of poor graphic design and quality, it is now, quite literally, the "Gamer's Bible". It is much more pleasing to the eye and contains a lot of news, previews and reviews for all the main consoles - PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, N64, Game Boy, NeoGeo Pocket and the PC. There's no real need to bother with a separate magazine for each console you own, this satisfies any console owner. The articles, I find, are written in a very witty and entertaining way, and when they slap a percentage on a game, I practically always agree. The added bonus of a tips book with every issue is also a plus, and every few episodes they might even throw in a poster, some sweets or even trading cards! In two words: Try It.

- 19/09/00 OK, I add this as am update of my article:
I have also read Official PlayStation Magazine, and found that even though the demo disk is good, it added too much to the price. I also believe that it's a little bit formal, even though the news is there.
I don't buy PC games mags, as I find that I rarely have the hardware to use them... and as I own a PlayStation, PC and GameBoy, it's obvious that I prefer a multi-format magazine. I don't have lots of money to spend on games, so when I do spend them, it'll be on well-know games covered in GamesMaster. |

- 18/09/00 Perhaps its that I only have one of the platforms the mag covers, but it was always poor value to me. Cost the same as a platform specific mag, but had only a quarter as much content that was relevant to me. I found that PC Gamer was one of the best to my tastes.
As a small and constructive criticism, I find these reviews better when you state which other mags you'e read (identifying your experience) and how the one you describe compares to them on specific features. Good review regardless. - TK |
