Advantages: Great on veg and larger gardens
Disadvantages: Not for people with kids or tiny gardens
I used to buy Garden Answers every month, but as time went on i bought it less and less. The main reason for this is most of the features are about big gardens and most of the 'things to build' are for big gardens too. I know that some of them can be altered for the smaller plot and they do have a 'few' articles aimed at the smaller garden, but i don't think it is enough. They need to do more articles to cover anybody that has kids, if you design a garden using a magazine they never seem to remember that children are going to use it. I'm not just talking about sons or daughters, it could be grandchildren, nephews or neices etc... Some useful ideas would be nice, not the one they run every year for the sandpit. How to keep a garden nice and build it around children, even if you have a 10ft square postage stamp! Also they could have a section on poisonous plants, not just for children as this has many uses. I have been surprised how many plants in your average garden are poisonous! I found a site that may be useful for checking plants out before you buy them, but it's Canadian! Heres the web address http://res.agr.ca/brd/poisonpl/ I have also found one that deals with houseplants http://blankees.com/house/plants/poisonous.htm I found both of these sites useful. If there was some indication in the magazines i would not need them. The rest of the magazine is very useful, if they could just get this bit right it would be a really good buy. On the other hand, if you have a large garden, no kids (of any type) and no pets this is perfect for you. I must admit their section on vegetables is always brilliant! The people that write it have got a perfect mix for every one. They have anything from large plots to containers and always seem to remember that not everybody has a greenhouse. If only they would talk to the people that do the features!!!!

Sarah_Unity - 16/11/00 Too many magazines seem to want to pretend that everyone has the same lifestyle! And why are there only ever articles about pets as pests? I have cats who regularly chew on my plants, so if I buy something I don't want it to poison them!! Magazine writers spend too much time in botanic gardens and not enough time in the real world!! |
