Advantages: Widespread coverage of the news
Disadvantages: Widespread bodies trying to read the blurry things !
I won’t mention any specific titles here, but you all know which newspapers I’m referring to. Newspapers are an essential part of everyday life. They give us all a view (albeit, a ‘managed’ view) of what is going on in the world outside of our own. They still have a place in modern society; even after the advent of the Internet and the globalisation of the media. What they bring to our lives is sometimes entertaining, relevant and mind-exercising. What does perplexes my simple mind however, is why - in this technological age, this twenty-first century - why do some of our ‘better quality’ newspapers insist on publishing in the outdated, outmoded, unmanageable ‘broadsheet’ format? Watching the news on TV last night, I was struck by the, habitually hilarious, consistently imbecilic, gymnastic ability called for from those attempting to read these broadsheet papers while packed on board the ‘transport of no delight’ - the commuter train. That caused me to wonder, just where can you comfortably read one of these fine publications? When will the publishers stop clinging to this ‘life-raft’ of convention? Just because a newspaper is a tabloid, doesn’t have to mean it is inferior or any less valid. Surely we’ve gone through the newspaper Olympics for long enough now? When will newspapers all be printed in a manageable format? When! GG

nightowl - 30/10/00 I quite agree. If you try and read them on the kitchen table people put their coffee cups on them and then complain when you turn over the page and knock them over. |
