Advantages: Right to respond
Disadvantages: Shock, Feeling of Invasion
As those of you have read my quality or quantity opinion, you will know that my daughter died suddenly this fact in itself was shocking enough but to my horror she was then in every tabloid paper. Imagine my horror to see my daughters face in the newspapers without any warning especially as it was a picture I had taken myself. I now know that my ex-wife had given a copy of the picture to our local paper and they had syndicated the story and due to her age and how she died, the national papers had picked up on it. The real shock was this story was published not just after her death but on the day of her funeral it made a very hard day harder still. I contacted the papers who to give them their due did all respond and in most cases agreed that they did need to review their policies when dealing with situations like this. ie a divorced couple. They now agree that both parties need to be contacted before publishing a story of this type and to confirm the facts that they are printing are actually correct, something that was not so in my daughters case. I appreciate that when something like this happens it is deemed newsworthy and suitable fodder for the masses to read, for really what can only be described as for their delectation I just pleaded with them to understand or to show compassion for the suffering parties involved. I felt that the day of my daughters funeral had been invaded and violated by the press by making the news of her death a sensational story. hopefully any further tragic cases will not be dealt with in the same way.

cbpotts - 09/08/01 ::sigh:: I'm so so sorry cata. Unfortunately, I don't have much faith in our news media. They're out for the story, not to care about peoples' feelings. How painful for you. :( |
