"Not Just Politics As Usual" *********** UPDATE*********** George Magazine Will Cease Publication With A Special March Commorative Issue Web Site To Remain Open January 5, 2001 A special commemorative issue of George in March will be the final publication for the magazine launched by John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1995. Jack Kliger, President and CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Magazines made the announcement to the staff on Thursday. The George Web site (www.georgemag.com), which gained a strong following during the presidential campaign, will continue to operate. ******************************* George was the invention of the late JFK Jnr who died in 1999 in a plane crash off Martha's Vineyard, USA. It is a superb mixture of politics, youth and fashion. Although admittedly in later issues due to readership issues the magazine became plagued with fashion adverts almost like Elle or Vogue. Discounting that, the ethos of George to politicise and motivate the youth of America is admirable. George was and still is high brow, but at the same time is able to look in on itself and poke fun. The magazine covers a wide range of topics and issues and does a very good job of it. Articles i can remember covered Russian MP Zhirinovski, Youth Street Culture, High Tech Politics of the Future, Jesse Ventura - Wrestler turned Governor. The magazine is not impossible to find but it isnt easy. Mind you, having said that i bought it in some small town in the Czech Republic. And in my opinion the cover price of £4.50 in the UK is well worth the read once a month if you like to see the lighter and more youthful side of American Politics. The George Magazine Web Site is equally interesting although limited in content compared to the magazine itself. It is defintely worth a look in for those interested: http://www.georgemag.com/ you can f
ind a wide variety of stuff there on a well designed and functional site. If JFK jnr was about today i am sure he would be proud of the way his magazine is going from strength to strength under its new editor in chief.
