Advantages: Knowledgeable and thorough golf coverage

Disadvantages: Hasn't continued all of its best features

Golf Monthly has been through a number of makeovers, but, after all, it is about 75 years old. I have subscribed for a number of years, and keep all of the back copies. It contains an excellent mixture of:-

Instruction features
Equipment testing
Course reviews, with prices, both from the United Kingdom and from all over the world
Interviews with top players
Features and previews of big tournaments
Extra free goodies, such as book extracts, golf balls or extra instruction
Good advertisements for everything and anything to do with golf
Rules questions
Letters from readers
Tournament reviews and scores

Equipment testing is done in detail by a cross-section of players of varying abilities, who rate the clubs and also give revealing comments. There is often news of brand new kit.

I always enjoy the magazine, and think it is the best of the bunch. However, I do have some suggestions for improvement.

One annoying thing is that the magazine for any month is published about four weeks in advance. OK, it's a marketing ploy, but it starts to look silly if you keep your Golf Monthlies, as, for example, the Masters, which is played in the first full week of April, is previewed in the April edition (which comes out on about the 1st of March) but not reviewed until The JUNE magazine, which comes out in very early May. The previews of major championships are excellent, but the reviews are rather thin. This is a pity, as Golf Monthly ought to consider its responsibility as an archive source.

One thing that used to be really good, but hasn't featured for some time, was a single or double page feature on what these days is termed a "signature hole" of a certain golf club. I hope GM will bring that one back.

All in all, though, this is a very good golf magazine. Cover price is currently £3.60, but subscriptions can cut about a third off this.

Summary: The best on the market

Tiger's human, after all! Poor third round did him.
