Advantages: Instructional material, occasional freebies with the magazine, letters pages.
Disadvantages: Bill Elliot's column, elitist comments in the letters pages.
Golf monthly is by far the most popular UK golf publication and not without good reason. Their instructional features are first class and really go into detail on how to execute particular shots.
GM's regular writers include 2010 US Open champ Graeme McDowell and former Ryder Cup star, David Howell, who always have something insightful to say for amateur golfers such as myself to learn from.
At the same time, as one previous reviewer observed, their post-major reviews are often lacking in detail and it seems ridiculous reading about the Open Championship in the October issue. This happens because they bring each month's issue out abut 6 weeks before the start of that month, so articles always seem to comment on events that took places ages ago!
One other irritant for me is Bill Elliot's column. The guy has forgotten more than I know about golf and is obviously a highly regarded golf journalist but his GM column is obsessed with Tiger Woods and taking every opportunity to bad mouth him. Rarely a month goes by when he doesn't make some barbed comment or other in Tiger's direction. For those GM fans to whom this hasn't occurred, please take a look through your backcopies which, like me, I'm sure you all keep hold of.
Apart from these minor issues GM is an excellent magazine for any UK golf fanatic.
Thanks for reading.
Summary: Keep up the good work GM. The number one magazine in UK golf.
