Advantages: A really interesting and easy to understand magazine for every level of experience.

Disadvantages: None that I can think of

Grow your own Magazine is a monthly magazine aimed at the kitchen gardener, and is presented in a way which is easy to understand whether you're a beginner or an experienced grower.

The July 2008 issue contains the following headings in the Table of Contents:

Veg Plot: The food Gardener, guides to growing carrots and fennel, and jobs for the month; Plot Essentials July is a to-do list; and All you need to know about chicory.

Fruit Garden: All you need to know about strawberries, and the Fruit Gardener.

Weekend Growers: Use your free seeds and The Instant Veg Garden.

Under Cover: Jobs for the Greenhouse

Ask the Experts: Q&A and The Experts Recommend....Radishes.

Smallholding: Chicken Picking, advice about how to choose chickens.

News: GYO News; and Pick of the Crop, advice on deterrents to stop birds eating your crops before you do.

Get Involved: Win! Is a selection of freebies; Over to You is for readers tips, experience and advice; and Subscribe Today: the GYO subscribers club.

Allotments: The Allotment Gardener, reduce water use and deter rodents; Organic Fertilizers Explained; Second-Wind Allotment, planting an extra set of crops; and Time Saving Tips for the Summer Plot.

Seasonal Chef: Recipes for July, using home grown produce; Grow your own...Stir Fry; and Preserving your crop - herbs.

Organic Growing: Garden organic guide to...Green Manures; Outside Chance, about how warmer summers make it possible to grow more exotic fruits outside; Future Food is about working with nature to fight off pests and diseases; and Material Gains is about the best way to fence off your plot.

Almost every edition comes with free stuff, usually seeds, and often planting guides and timetables. July's issue comes with free beetroot seeds and a pair of work gloves. Not a bad haul considering that the seeds are valued at £1.70 and most work gloves cost at least £1.

The Magazine shop price is £3.45, but a direct debit subscription costs £17.60 for the first 9 months and for each subsequent six month period, bringing the price down to £2.35 per issue for the first year, and costing £2.93 per issue after that. The cost for a one-off payment for 15 months is £39.30, or £2.83 per issue. At the moment the cost appears to be the same whether you subscribe by phone, mail or online.

Summary: I look forward to each new edition of this magazine.
