Advantages: Open minded, Reasonable pricing, Information
Disadvantages: Adverts
The first issue of Guitar World that I bought was their 20th Anniversary issue. What caught my attention was Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes on the cover, boasting their Internet Concert. This issue also featured One-on-One lessons with Metallica, Creed, Pink Floyd, Van Halen and Pantera; among others. Most of all it featured two of rock music's all time classics: "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin and "One" by Metallica. This was the first issue I bought and I have bought many more since then, but I haven't come across an issue as jam-packed as with one. There are far two many ads in Guitar magazines in general, but with Guitar World you can see why. They interview a load of bands, review tons of gear, they have their own website to maintain and every month they transcribe 6 songs.....they have a lot of expenses and the manufacturing adverts help the magazine keep the costs of the price of the magazine down. Ok, with that out of the way, what kind of other stuff is in Guitar World. Every month, to go along with the transcribed songs, they also print the Line6 Pod Settings for those songs, which, if you own a Pod (like me), it can come in very useful. They also feature what they call the "Ax Museum", which is where they delve into the archives and of a great guitar player and publish his technique, gear and riffs. They give ecord reviews, gear reviews......you name it, there's far too much to mention here. Just one thing, my favourite guitarist Kirk Hammett resides here with his column "The Sound and the Fury" and there was an issue that I missed that featured an interview with James Hetfield (metallica) and Tommy Iommi (black sabbath). GW is a magazine that covers everything guitar related, they don't specialize in one particular type of music, as long as it involves the guitar it will geta mention. This mag is a must for guitarists everywhere.
