Advantages: Very comprehensive & Informative
Disadvantages: Takes some getting used to if a beginner - but worth the effort.
Of all available guitar magazines i've seen, Guitarist seems to be the most comprehensive one available. No other mag can match its content in terms of quality. Not ideal for beginners to the instrument, but it certainly won't take more than several issues to pick up the jist of things. This mag is also complimented with the addition of Bassist magazine - once more, it can claim to be the guitarists' bible! Product reviews are well thought and concise; new product info is good (although one could argue that other competitors who release their mags earlier in the month get this news to the public first); artist news is good; tutorials are very good (though some of the dedicated tutorial mags can eclipse Guitarist in this department); classifieds ads are...well, classified ads; Product index is very useful for the equipment hunter etc. A common theme with many mags these days are cover disks. Guitarists' CD is excellent. You can check out sound samples of the products reviewed, get a couple of featured artists' new tracks and even have a jam with some of the Guitarist staff! It's certainly the best all-round monthly guitar resource - and most definitely worth the £4.99 price tag. This is Champions League stuff, whilst other British guitar mags may be English Premiership League. Oh yeah, if you want to compare to US mags....forget it - they come no where near.
