Advantages: lots of gossip
Disadvantages: a bit trashy
Heat magazine.......
I have to admit it, although rather ashamed to, but I love a bit of trashy celebrity gossip on a regular basis. I find reading about the lives of people who get paid to be under the spotlight sometimes rather uplifting and as my friends are mostly into the same things as me it gives us something else to chat mindlessly about that isn't work or children!
Heat magazine is, I find, the best celebrity magazine available although costing fractionally more than others on the shelves it is worth paying that bit extra for. Heat costs £1.65pence which is more than Closer which costs £1.30pence and Star that is sold at the bargain price of 65pence (not that I have gone out this evening and splashed out on all three magazines or anything!!!)
The cover of this weeks Heat (a new one comes out every 7 days) shows, as most magazines do lately, several celebrities wearing only bikinis and the cover title is "Beach Bodies! What do men secretly prefer!" This story relates to the skinny celebrities such as Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole to the more curvaceous of celebs such as Kerry Katona. The outcome of the survey was that most men find curvy women more attractive! Not really much of a surprise there but I guess it is nice to know but considering in the picture of Cheryl Cole you can literally see her ribs sticking out and her hip bone protruding it isn't really any wonder.
Over cover stories from this issue (25th April to 1st May) include a second part interview with Natalie Cassidy (ex-eastenders, ex-skinny) and another story showing what celebrities will look like in years to come. The cover in general is rather appealing because it shows quite a few celebrities on one page and draws you in to wanting to read the stories about them. Now I understand this will not be everyone's cup of tea and I also understand that there really isn't much in the way of intellectual information but I find reading these articles gives me a little bit of escapism from the humdrum that is "normal" living.
The magazine on the whole is rather thick and filled with short and long stories alike. Comparing it to the Star and closer magazines, it has a good many more pages though I have not counted the advertisements in each one as these do tend to take up a fair few pages.
The contents of the magazine of course varies greatly from week to week (thank goodness as I seem to be buying it rather regularly lately). There are regular features however that change the content but the theme is always the same such as "Look of the Week". This weeks look is the Maxi-dress and it shows a different star wearing a different dress on each day of the past week. This item I rather like because it does give me ideas for what to wear and what would perhaps suit me. Similar clothes type features such as this run through the whole magazine and others include "Who Wore it Best?" and this is wear we see two celebrities wearing the same thing on a different occasion but readers have voted as to who looked better in the clothes. This feature again proves that just because it is fashion doesn't mean it will suit everyone.
There are many interviews with celebrities throughout the whole magazine and as I previously said there is a continuation of an interview (dragging it out) with Natalie Cassidy. Claudia Winkleman and Kirstie Allsop are also features in this edition although these are perhaps stars who I have less interest in than most and although the interviews and questions were okay to read I wouldn't say I was overly enthralled whilst reading them.
Make-up also features heavily in this magazine (no pun intended) and again this is good for getting ideas and also if, like me, you are keen on following trends then these sections are a real must read. Of course I take the product recommendations with a pinch of salt as I am never sure whether the magazine has a deal with the said company or not so until I have tried something myself I would never believe in wonder creams or the like. However the information given about make-up is helpful and always worth reading up on.
So really this magazine is filled with pictures of celebrities and interviews with them. You have sections on fashion, being what not to wear and who wears what the best. They cover make-up and hair a little but just enough to give you ideas or to see what the latest styles are and what the celebrities are doing (right or wrong). Of course like any good magazine there are always horoscopes at the back and good old crossword to give the brains something to work with at least!
All in all this magazine is good for what I want, which is a little bit of escapism and celebrity gossip by the truck load. It is a reasonable price for the quantity and quality you are getting and I should think I will continue to buy this particular magazine over all the others because it has more celebrity and none of that "real life- my mother is a monster" type articles which I just cannot stand to read.
I think for a trashy magazine such as this I will award a five star rating and give a very high recommendation because after all we do all need a bit of trash from time to time.
I do hope this has been of some help to you.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
Summary: a great read

- 27/04/09 My girlfriend reads this most weeks and I always laugh at the cycle of "Fat Celebs", "Skinny Celebs", "Celebs looking ugly", which seems to repeat every 3 weeks. But for the price I suppose its a good buy. |
