Advantages: TV guide

Disadvantages: not many words!

Doing night shift can be boring at times. I have a job where I do work as it comes to me, and some nights it just doesn't come to me, so I need something to take my mind off the fact that it's 3am on a Saturday morning and I'm sitting in an office, when what I really should be doing is falling out of a club and seeking out the nearest hot dog van. Until recently, this something was magazines, be it celebrity, fashion, or real life, and let me tell you it isn't a cheap habit to have. I decided enough is enough recently and started taking books to work -of which I have amassed many, and read few. Recently though, a colleague left a copy of Heat magazine lying around, and I couldn't resist having a read of it!

Heat magazine is a celebrity gossip magazine, which also includes fashion pages and a TV Guide. It comes out weekly -on a Tuesday I believe although I'm not entirely sure, and will set you back £1.65, which I think is a lot for a weekly (and one of the reasons I didn't buy it all that often, when I was still buying magazines).

The cover of the issue I have, as well as the red Heat logo, has pictures of various 'celebrities' - Tara Reid (who is she anyway?), Nadine from Girls Aloud and Nicky Hilton, with a huge caption 'The return of the skinny celeb'. This is a favourite with Heat, and often celebrities they deem too skinny are emblazoned on the cover. There is also a big quote 'Macca divorce - in pictures.' I can see I have a thrilling read ahead of me.

The first sixty or so pages (yes, you read that right, sixty) have very few words. We are firstly treated to a huge two page picture featuring a big crowd of journalists - if you look closely however, you will see Heather Mills in amongst them - hey, this is better than a Where's Wally book! Moving on, we then come to the cover story (the skinny Z-listers), we are given a profile of these women, as well as before pictures of them looking a curvy....uhm...size 6, followed by them now at size minus 6. Even in this article, there is very little to actually read, just quotes from 'sources close to random celebrity' Ironically this is then followed by an article on how to lose weight...but healthily. So that's OK then...

Then comes the Mills/McCartney saga. Again, this is mostly pictures, but we only hear the scandalous/gossipy/no brain type parts - such as the water over the lawyers head and half a page devoted to the outfit Heather wore.

Halfway through, and lots of pictures later - including one of Sadie Frost's nipples (Heat love to show stars flashing) - we get to 'Star Style' with the poignant and profound tagline 'Because without clothes we'd all be naked'. This contains several pages of Women's fashion, so probably where the men (who pretend not to read it, but really do) get bored of reading it, unless they're the sort of men who like to steal your stilettos of a weekend. I actually think the fashion pages are quite good. They show the clothes alone - not on models - which I guess is cheaper for them, and I prefer it that way as often fashion shoots are done in a way that you can't really see the clothes, due to the stupid 'artistic' poses they put the models in. They are also realistic prices too - none of that craziness you often see in Glamour magazine, where I often check out the price tag of something I like, only to see that the oh-so pretty dress I have just seen will set me back 3 and a half years wages. It's in cases like these things seem to go black for a while and I wake to find someone shoving smelling salts in my face and picking me up off the floor....

Moving past the fashion pages, we then come to the first pages that actually contain words - a three page interview with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.........Andrew Lloyd Webber!? Come on people, is that the best you can do?

There are several pages of reviews - and you know I love reviews, why else would I be here? No washing up liquid or galaxy chocolate reviews to be found here, mind you, but new films, books, DVD's and music are all covered here, and in easy to read, short chunks.

Next we go on to the TV guide. I do like magazines that include a TV guide, because even though I rarely (if ever) buy a separate TV guide, it means you can flick through the TV for the week ahead, and make a mental note of anything you want to watch. As well as the actual TV guide there are also a couple of interviews with Soap Stars and other TV personalities giving their opinions on what they do and don't like to watch on TV.

~Conclusion~

I think Heat magazine is probably one of the best known and most read celebrity magazines, but I really don't see why, as it is not one of my favourites. On the plus side though, as Heat is a weekly publication then the stories are pretty up to date, and at 138 pages, you do get more for your money than most weeklies (even though this one is mostly pictures). I also like the fact that it has a TV Guide included with it.

In reality though, it's little more than a picture book really. I know some people will think badly of celebrity magazines and the people who read them no matter what, but I do honestly think that if, like me, you do enjoy reading them, there are better magazines to choose from, such as Closer, Reveal and OK! all of which have more to read and a few real life stories, and world news thrown in too.

This magazine started off as an unusually informative rag that was actually quite enjoyable. Its descended into a tacky gossip rag full of z-list celebrities and their cheap fashion disasters. Excellent review.
