Advantages: Some quite witty writing

Disadvantages: The obsession with skinny/fat celebs

I've been a loyal reader of 'heat' for about 8 years now and although it's not quite as good as it used to be, I still look forward to nipping out of work every Wednesday to buy it, (I know it's advertised as being out on Tuesdays but here in Northern Ireland we have to wait for a whole day to get our hands on it). You can buy in most magazine shops for £1.65, although every so often they include another magazine like 'Closer' or 'More' and make you pay a bit more for it.

'heat' is one of a number of celebrity obsessed magazines available, and ironically some of its contributors have become minor celebs in their own right, with Mark Frith, Lucie Cave, Polly Hudson and Boyd Hilton all making regular TV appearances.

Obviously the first thing we see is the front cover; a mish mash of various photos from the week's world of showbiz. The mag has several regular items; 'Everyone's Talking About,' reader emails and letters, horoscopes, a crossword, and 'The heat Interview'.

One of its most popular features in recent years is 'Torso of the Week', a full page photo of a shirtless male celeb (which bizarrely gave us a shirtless Tony Blair on one occassion). I slightly resent this item as it got me into a spot of bother in my previous job; how was I to know that sticking up a picture of Eric Mabius (Tim from the L Word, Daniel from Ugly Betty) with his pecs out, would offend so many people?!

Needless to say, I left that job, and now work in a nudity-friendly office.

My favourite part of 'heat' is the TV guide; not only is it always useful to have it close to hand, it's reviews are usually funny and often highlight some 'must -see' shows.

'heat' is probably the best of the current crop of showbiz magazines, and although there are several cheaper alternatives, I find 'heat' to have more content, and better writing. So if you're on a long train journey or just bored, 'heat' is your best bet.

Summary: Not as good as it used to be, but still worth a read
