Advantages: some interesting bits

Disadvantages: gossip

I remember when Heat mag first came out. It was big news, and for a while I bought it. It is an entertainment magazine that sells over half a million copies each issue. The stories focus on a mixture of celebrity news, gossip and fashion.

This is really a magazine for women, but it certainly doesn't ignore men. A lot of the mag is sex focused which means the boys will always be picking up the copies belonging to the women in their house. Indeed, it's not marketed directly at women in any way - masculine colours fill the mag as much as the feminine, but no-one can argue that the majority readership, or at least those who buy it, are women.

The stories are mostly based on celebrities, with the obsession with stars being in full swing. If you like to see pics of Ricky Gervais jogging down a road, or like to see Amy Winehouse looking rough (again), then you'll like it. The gossip and fashion sections are definitely the most girly, but they serve a purpose in that they keep you up-to date with the latest fashions.

The bits that appeal to me are the movie and music reviews. These are decidedly short, but they're still quite informative. If you like more detail in your reviews, try the Telegraphs 'Review' mag which comes with each Saturday edition.

One thing this has over lots of other mags of a similar eke is the way it gives TV listings. For me, however, I have no TV, so it doesn't make much difference haha.

There are occasional celebrity interviews, although these tend to revolve around the UK celebrity market, and I find the US celebs much more interesting!

All in all, a nice enough mag that is ostensibly for women but doesn't leave the men behind either.

Summary: do it
