Advantages: It's funny, written well and has loads of pictures of celebs looking dodgy

Disadvantages: None

My flatmate used to subscribe to Heat so I always used to read her copy which is how I first discovered Heat. When I moved out I decided that I actually couldn't live without Heat so I started buying it for myself. Heat has been going for over ten years now, and is a celebrity gossip magazine disguised as the weekly TV listings. Every week focuses on who's too fat/thin, who's wearing the dodgiest outfit of the week, where to buy the latest trends from, one or two main celebrity interviews and some cinema/album/book reviews (a token gesture). The magazine is predominantly aimed at women although I know quite a few men who find it a guilty pleasure

The journalism in Heat is incredibly funny, and always refers to itself in the third person ("Heat understand that ..."). Not a week goes without Heat commenting on something/someone and I will have already uttered those very words myself, so I feel as though Heat can read my mind. Sometimes they'll do a special pull-out of packed full of photos of people in horrific wedding outfits or of shops with amusing names. This is great if you love to laugh at others (which I do). They are often do a special double-magazine edition where you get a Closer or a More! Magazine (Heat's sister magazines) as well, for an extra £1 or something. This isn't so great if you have no interest in paying more to get a 2nd magazine as you might not want it, but they sadly don't give you the option of buying Heat by itself at its usual price.

Heat costs £1.65 per issue (at the moment) and is a weekly magazine. You can subscribe which would work out cheaper for you, and there are different lengths of subscription from one year, to six months to just a couple of months. A 6-month subscription costs about £33 at the moment, plus you get a free gift if you sign up. If you choose to go down the subscribing route your magazine should still be delivered to you on a Tuesday (for free) however the post can, on occasion, hold it up. If an edition doesn't turn up you simply call the helpline and they'll add another edition onto the end of your subscription to make up for it. I had a subscription for a few months and had absolutely no problems with it, but I did miss being able to read Heat during my Tuesday lunch-hours, as I had to wait until I got home to see what the postie had delivered. I'm not one for waiting.

Summary: A great weekly read - something to look forward to.
