Advantages: link to current cosmopolitan HipHop culture, good articles
Disadvantages: too much RnB emphasis, some reviews seem shoddy
I used to buy every single edition of this great mag. HHC was and, to some extent still is my sole source for insight in to the latest goings-on in HipHop culture. I feel that, today, with the glossy covers and caver images of current Pop-rap and RnB stars, HCC has either had an editorial clerout or is making a bit to increase flagging sales. Sure, most people would associate these celebs with 'HipHop' scene, I for one don't. RnB and popRap (Eminem etc) should be consigned to magazines that deal with this specific genre. I know that many of these artists claim to be HipHoppers but the truth is, that they've only had their roots in HipHop, or have been associated with other HipHop artists. I had to get that one off my chest! To the content of the mag: I find HHC to be very informative, there are the latest interviews with artists, many well-written articles by people in the know that give a HipHop slant on the world etc. There are also the latest record reviews and articles covering HipHops diverse history. It is because of this that HHC forms my most reliable link to HipHop culture that this deeply rooted in the US, but ever-sprawling outwards. Sometimes I get the feeling that HHC is going the way of The Source - another 'popified' mag - but the true writers yank it back. I still think HHC is worth the money because of this valuable link, a monthly update and a fresh HipHop look at things. HHC keeps you in touch. Harry

- 20/05/01 This is kinda short an it doesn't really say much except Eminem sucks dick. You should put a bit more about whats in HHC maybe, but it was quite a good review.I agree with your opinion anyway - hip hop is getting way too mainstream and its thededicated fans who are having to put up with all the commercial bullshit such as Eminem and the new improved/mainstream crap Dre |
