Advantages: Good marketing

Disadvantages: Too many adverts, Not enough to interest, Trying to cover too much

The hype and anticipation that surrounded the launch of this new magazine actually made me want to read it. Someone somewhere had even had the bright idea of putting a teaser in the Evening Standard - just enough to wet our appetites. It worked and I went out and bought a copy for myself.

Unfortunately, far from the riveting read I'd been promised I found myself awash with adverts and covered in a pile of those ghastly loose inserts that always end up straight in the bin. My understanding is that a full page advertisement can cost in the region of £3,000 and, if this is the case, InStyle must be making a fortune.

The few articles that they did feature were both short and uninteresting but worse than that was the splurge of different topics. Rather than try to corner a market, InStyle covers everything from sex to interior design. However, I think that my favourite bit was the poor excuse for a society page at the back. In other words, a selection of photos with six lines of drivel about what a great party it was - next time guys, leave it to the professionals!
