Advantages: Colourful and small

Disadvantages: Only interesting for locals

'The Beacon' is a full colour magazine which is delivered free to 65,000 homes and businesses across the Isle of Wight. You will get a different version of the Beacon depending on where you live on the Island, and therefore, the magazine has separate editions known as the; West Wight, Newport, Cowes, Ryde, South Wight and East Wight Beacons. All the magazines have the same editorial pieces, with the only differences being found in the adverts, which are specific to each location.

Established in 1994, the Beacon is an interesting read for locals as it features the latest news, community projects, and events which are relevant to each particular area. The magazine differs from a newspaper as the articles (which are generally well written and feature appropriate photographs) often focus on positive things, rather than the negatives, in order to promote community development and pride in the local area. The A5 magazine is also handy as it contains a 'What's On' diary style guide which details gigs and shows which take place across the Island.

Other regular features include the 'Eating Out', 'Health and well-being', Homes and Gardens' and 'Outdoor Pursuits' sections. There is also a monthly historical write-up ('Island Story') relating to things like local shipwrecks and military exploits, which always seems to be well researched (even if I generally do flick past that section).

Scattered throughout the pages are a selection of advertisements which support local businesses and promote shops in each area. Whilst I'm not someone who generally looks at ads, it's a bit more interesting when they relate to a new shop or bar where you live.

All in all, the Beacon usually makes for an entertaining read and covers many aspects of local life. The magazine is colourful and not too large, and best of all... it's free!
