Public Libraries... Are they a thing of the past or something that we should all be more grateful more? Libraries have been around since there were books or pieces of writing, everybody needs a place to store books and so they create a library to store books and knowledge. Almost every town in the United Kingdom now has a public library which is free to join and borrow books from.

Libraries' allow you to borrow books for free and borrow CD's, DVD's, Videos, Games, Printed Music, Maps & Newspapers for a small fee which goes towards maintaining the library and paying off the cost of the books. The fee is much less than it would cost you to borrow the book or other item so it's a very cheap way to read books or see films.

Many people don't realise how important a library is so I've got a list of pro's and con's for you to help you make up your own mind about them.

Pros -
They are free to join
Books are free to borrow
A quiet place to go and read or just relax
You can research in the library
Use computers & the internet for free
Take books, dvds, cds etc away with you
You tend to get at least 3 weeks to read a book
They're a place to meet new people
They are a good way to get DVD's etc cheaply
You can read new releases for free whereas they are expensive to buy
In most libraries you can renew an item online or over the phone so you can keep it as long as you need to read it.

Cons -
They do charge to take out some items
The late return fees can be extortionate
Not so many people read now as they used to
Books are so cheap many people prefer to buy them and keep them than having to return them.
If another library member requests a book that you have you are not allowed to renew it.

I really like libraries and visit my local one at least once a week, my library card is constantly maxed out with books as when I get there I find there are so many that I want to read. Most libraries will be divided up into different sections so it's really easy to find what you're looking for. I used to just stick to fiction books but I've found that when I wandered round the other sections there are a lot of really good things there that unless I'd seen them I wouldn't have thought to look for. Not only is my library card always full but I am constantly renewing books online, most libraries will allow you to do this. I've kept a couple of fact books for about 3 months now because I'm still extracting information from them which would have cost me around £30 to buy all the books in a shop. As an extra bonus I find that the librarians at my local library are very friendly and willing to help you look for anything or just stop for a quick chat. It's a good place to make new friends.

Overall I think that libraries are great places, I really enjoy visiting mine and they're a great place to be able to read loads of things that I wouldn't be able to afford to buy.

Summary: Brilliant, I love libraries
