Fallen a long way from its heyday

I am an FHM man, lets get that straight right from the Beginning, I am 30 years old and don't consider myself a "lad" anymore ( sniff !!) so only occasionally do I read Loaded magazine, after reading an issue recently I felt compelled to write a review.

Loaded was founded back in 1994 by James Brown who is a former deputy editor for NME, I started reading it not long after in fact long before I became an FHM convert, mainly because around the 1994 /1995 / 1996 era i was a "Lad" and also the lad culture was in full effect back then, this combined with the rise of Britpop and "Cool Britannia" made loaded the unofficial Magazine for Britain especially as it charted such luminaries as Liam Gallagher, Oliver Reed, Vic & Bob etc.

Over time loaded's format was emulated by FHM which started out as mainly a fashion magazine much in the style of early GQ and was distributed through high class mens fashion outlets, as loaded gained prominence FHM decided to change their editorial style and go more in the direction of Loaded, but still keep its high class glossy feel which proved to be a great idea and before long FHM overtook loaded as the number one "Lads Mag" I must confess I used to buy both simultaneously but over time I found loaded to be a little too like Viz for my liking, and now it seems even more so.

Pick up an issue of Loaded and FHM right now and compare them side by side and the differences are astounding, Loaded quite frankly seems a bit too much of a mess, its pages don't seem to have any structure and just seem to be a mixture of photography and blurbs in a random order, also they seem to be steering into the soft porn direction as the issue I picked up had a couple of features with two page spreads that looked like they could be straight out of Playboy, but without the obvious edge that playboy has with its pictures.

Unfortunately the "Lad Mag" phenomenon has died down considerably and no more apparent is that than in the pages of Loaded, it still has some good content, but nowhere near the quality it had in the mid 90's.

Loaded for those that don't already know is a mens magazine full of intresting facts that us guys really like to know and here are a few examples. It is prohibited in strip clubs to serve food or drinks during a show that involves fluids being violently ejected from a vagina.(yes that is an actual law) There were 77 recorded incidents involving straws in the UK in 1994. How to play Head Crisp Karate and Sumo Cellphone(you gotta but it to learn sorry.) Loaded really is a great magazine yes it may seem like soft porn to some girlies out there but it is all done in the best of tastes for instance the PORN-A-LIKES where excerts from real porn films are taken when a star of the show looks like a celeb and a lot of them are brilliant and very funny all parts personal covered with black squares of course. I also love the real life interviews and accounts of all the villians and bad guys that they get usually the most enjoyable ones are the gangsters and drug trafficers. This months one is all about a couple of guys who got banged up and tortured in an Arab jail for posing a spliff really harsh but hey you live the life pal. Yes the magazine has lot's of adverts but most are actually quite appealing usually containing a bevvy of beautys and for all those guys out there who dream of seeing those soap girls uncovered they are all in the December edition this month so go and get it. Loaded really is full of fun little stories and facts that give you and good giggle and some that you can't quite believe are true. Sex tips from the sexy Jo are really funny and readers letters sent to her for answers are usually well I believe a complete wind up but hey makes good hilarious reading. Tips on making a threesome and what she really likes are always features and they do give some rather handy hints so thaks JO. The other thing that this mag does well is reviews on boys toys and videos
and music short blunt and to the point reviews make it easy for you to check out the latest whats in whats out products. Free stuff is a plenty this month it is a calander of beautiful ladies for next year but it really does vary oh and this month you also get a free pack of trebor soft mint shots and they are wicked. You can also send in a begging letter and if you got a good enough excuse to need what it is you need they will give you it mansions and fast cars are a bit far out though. The back of the mag is full of the usual rubbishy sex lines and internet sex sites but hey thats for all you real pervs out there so lads get your own back on the girlies mags and go get a copy not bad at £3.50 but remeber to get the love of your life a girlie mag so you can read yours in peace and quite.

When push come to shove that’s basically what all lads magazines boil down to. However loaded does show some other quality’s, some been the key word here. It makes attempts at covering your typical aspects, associated with your typical lad’s life. Then again the produces aren’t daft, they know as well as we do; SEX SELLS. Get down to your local newsagents, crab a copy, and here’s a breakdown of what you should find: ~~ A is for ~~ Adverts – These annoying little rascals account for nearly 50% of the magazine space. No wonder the thing is so cheap! These vary in size, from huge double-paged spreads, courtesy of global companies. Right down to inch-by-inch tiddlers, requested by dodgy Cuban sex lines. Art - They used to run an “Art of the month” competition, where readers would send in their abstract pieces, and get rewarded accordingly. Not sure of this still runs. Alcohol – From Barcardi cat adverts, to reviews of the best lagers. Loaded definitely is in the know when it comes to mans favourite liquid. My favourite quote: “If it’s wet, drink it”. ~~ B is for ~~ Business – Interested in placing an advert in loaded? Here’s are the numbers you need: “Consumer ad’s - 020 7261 6179”, “Record Company Ads - 020 7261 5643”. ~~ C is for ~~ Competition, The – In my opinion “Loaded” isn’t the best, and is far from the worst. Here’s how I rate it against it competitors: · FHM - ***** · Loaded - **** · Maxim - *** · GQ - *** Clubs – Whether its ministry of sound in Ibiza or Isis down the road, Loaded has been there, and sometimes has got the low-down. Depends whether the reporter managed to stay sober or not! Celebrities – Bog names flock to Loaded for extra publicity and renowned hospitality. However what they get is a do
dgy interviewer asking all sorts of personal and embarrassing questions. Oh well, makes interesting reading! Calendar – The famed LOADED CALENDER. It adorns many a young mans wall. Crammed full of sublime beauties, it’s the perfect way to cover that chipped plasterboard. Crime – For some strange reason myself, and Loaded seem to be fascinated by crime. I am not sure what it is, whether there is a Meany inside me trying to show its ugly head, or I am genuinely interested in the plotting of it all. Who know, I like I anyway! ~~ D is for ~~ Drugs - This is the bit of loaded I find most disturbing, with in depth descriptions on how to use a coke can to get that “phat-high”, it doesn’t really appeal to me. I’m a good boy. Dartboard – Last page of the magazine, you’ve just about had enough of celebrities, and Loaded darn well know it! They have created “Celebrity Dartboard”. Pin it to your wall and this month you get 100 points for hitting “Sharleen Soiteri’s” nose, and with a name like that, I am not complaining. ~~ E is for ~~ E-Mail – Want to contact the loaded guys? Then get typing and forward your message to: loadweb@ipcmedia.com. ~~ F is for ~~ Freebies - This month you got a stonking great bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Mile and a free guide to the UK’s best totty. In the past things such as CD’s and posters have also been on the menu. Fashion – The entire end section of Loaded is dedicated to fashion. From shoes to sweaters, you have it all. Browse through the latest release from big names or see what’s going to be cool next month in the club. ~~ G is for ~~ Girls, girls, girls - This is what basically sells Loaded! Loads of gorgeous babe’s getting their kit off in the name of male entertainment. Good stuff. Gadgets’n’gizmos – Reviews of the latest technica
l wonders, its amazing what we can do today, no, it really is! ~~ H is for ~~ Humour – From a personal point of view, this is what I like best about the magazine, the tone of their humour maybe a bit under-the-belt at times, but usually it hit the spot in my book. ~~ I is for ~~ IPC Media – The folks who publish loaded. Want their address for some strange reason? Well here it is: Ipc-media Stamford Street London SE1 9LS Telephone: 020 7261 5562 Interviews – Sportsmen, Pop-Stars, Hollywood legends, get inside their heads, and find out more about them. ~~ J is for ~~ Joking – Otherwise known as jesting, a key point of Loaded’s purchasing appeal. Fancy a chuckle, this may or may not be the magazine for you. ~~ K is for ~~ Keith Kendrick – The editor, and main man at Loaded, want to get something in the magazine, it goes through Keith. Or so a little birdie told me. ~~ L is for ~~ Life – Loaded attempts to pack a man's life in to one magazine, however it misses out on subtle things such as sense and tactfulness. Then again, when has life been fair? ~~ M is for ~~ Monthly - Yep, that’s how often the big L is published. Motors – A bloke’s magazine wouldn’t be complete without references to the top cars around. Cars, and ladies, go hand in hand really. ~~ N is for ~~ Nope -, I am stumped on this one! Any ideas? ~~ O is for ~~ Online – As well as the glossy paper version of Loaded, you can find it on the web too. Simply follow this address to enter male paradise: www.loaded.co.uk. However this site seems to be down at the moment. I will keep you informed. ~~ P is for ~~ Price - £3 an issue is very reasonable considering the freebies that can be had. Porn-a-likes - Makes me chuckle, matches up popular faces from our TV screens to s
tars from blue movies. Barry Evans. Lol. ~~ Q is for ~~ Quiz/Competition – Well I could have put this in the “C” category, however that is “loaded”, get the pun, and I would be rogered for something to put in “Q”. Well these normally involve either doing something daft, nothing at all. To either win something crap, or something splendid. ~~ R is for ~~ Reviews – Videos and Music, cult and normal, like it or not. Loaded give you and unbiased, detailed opinion on whether you should folk out your hard earned cash. ~~ S is for ~~ Slogan – Like most magazines today Loaded also has a slogan, or sub-title if you want to get posh. It currently reads: “For men who should know better” Marketing magic, or a load of old tosh, whatever you call it, it works. Subscription – “Fast and free delivery to your door every month”. That’s what they claim. Plus you save 20% per issue if you take out a 12month contract. If you like loaded then why not? Survey – Every month they do a survey of something trivial, items in the past include: “Your favourite flat-mate” and “Strangest place you’ve had sex”. All make absolutely pointless, yet interesting reading. Sport – Well it’s a lads magazine it? Some interesting columns on football issues such as ticket touts and where the best seat in the ground is. Plus other humorous facts, such as “The worlds fattest sportsmen”. Sex – Need I say more? ~~ T is for ~~ Top-Shelf – Some people may say that Loaded, and indeed other magazine in the same genre, should be located on the top shelf. My opinion, I think they are too prude, however I appreciate there view, and yes they have got a point. A child walking in to a shop could just pick it up, and open the page to find a whopping great pair. Not good
. ~~ U is for ~~ Useless – That’s me, not been able to think of something for “V”. ~~ V is for ~~ Very! – Loaded is extreme in every way, including the negatives, if you can put up with the lows, then you will enjoy the highs. Err, simple as that really. ~~ W is for ~~ Women – Not in the same class as a “girl”. Slightly more sophisticated, and of an older standing, perhaps one to draw in a wider audience perhaps? ~~ X is for ~~ X-Box- Come on give me a break! X-Box is the upcoming games console also made by Microsoft. At least it’s remotely relative! ~~ Y is for ~~ You! – The person who will either love it or hate it. A bit like marmite this one; there’s no middle ground to stand on. ~~ Z is for ~~ Zebras – Well, you may think I am rambling now, however Loaded actually once did an article on zebra stripes, and the way the Americans say “zee-bra”. That’s id my memory serves me correct. If your male, not easily offended, and like a laugh, you should enjoy reading loaded. That’s is you can see past all the big budget advertising. Bye for now. James

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

As well as being entertaining, this magazine is very informative in many aspects. There are articles on current issues and a section for drugs news which is extremely relevant in modern society. At the back of Loaded magazine, there is a "Hedonist's Handbook" which offers reviews on books, films and computer games and also a "48 Hours In..." section, which describes weekend holiday destinations. There is also a fashion section towards the back which can be a very important part of a young man's lifestyle. I buy this magazine every month as it contains all of the aforementioned and is priced at only £3, which is good value for a magazine of its thickness.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Loaded is yet another men?s magazine available in the U.K., offering news and information on contemporary men?s issues, such as health, music, gadgets, to name a couple of areas. Whilst Loaded is one of the oldest men?s magazines, it is currently being outsold by both FHM and Front. As the market for men?s magazines has grown, the style of writing and quality of content have improved, and it is arguable as to whether or not Loaded has adapted to these changes. Offering far less than FHM in terms of quality and quantity, Loaded is a magazine that I would recommend, but not as regular reading material. As with other magazines in this area, all the usual interviews are included, but the tyle of interview technique doesn't really seem to ask the questions you'd want answered. Additionally, the regular features in Loaded do not really provide enough to make regular purchasing attractive, and there are no celebrities (other than in interviews) contibuting to the magazine - meaning that there is no stylistic variance across the magazine, making it a somewhat tiresome read. Whilst the content may appear a little light, this magazine does cover some topical areas. However, considering its' style of writing, I could only recommend reading Loaded whimsically - certainly not a time filling magazine.

What can I say about Loaded...when it first came out it was a ground breaking mag, setting the pace for others to follow. Recently however it seems the other mags, particularly FHM, have caught up, and seem to be giving Loaded a much deserved pasting. Once the features were always new, entertaining and enjoyable to read, now days however it seems they've gone to the well once too often. The last time I bought this mag it was purely for the free posters, much needed to dsecorate my humble student accomadation. The mag however was barely touched, not even by my housemates when I left it in the lounge. Had I done this with a copy of FHM Im quite sure it would not have lasted a week. What Im trying to say is Loaded has become boring. Maybe it's me, having grown up a little could it be that its juvenile nature no longer appeals to me. Or, more likely, is it just that the features never change, the articles remain written in that oh so impoverished style. Competitions which no-one is really fussed if they win. And not forgetting the obligatory naked ladies...none of which seem to appeal after seeing them spread across the pages of Loaded. Wake up Loaded...get back to your best.

            Disadvantages

I got my first copy of loaded when I was in London last weekend, I'll admit firstly could my eye was lisa from steps on the front cover and coz I never had my girlfriend with me I dared to buy it. At first I thought it would just be a soft porn mag with lots women half naked which some of it was but then again that's what sells magazines! But you cannot call the story called "Fate worse than death row" - April 2001 a porn story where they followed the lives of 2 inmates in Bang kwang prison - the "worst" prison in the world. This section got to my heart at how bad the situation was and wonder what would be good enough to do time in there. The rest of the mag seems to be a bit of harmless fun with an interview with oasis and trigger happy tv. So the people that said the mag was crap maybe need to get a sense of humour. Maybe they are old? Cheers

I am still unsure about Loaded, in its right I have to say it is a reasonable read. Although I have to say the content is very geared to the drug/club culture. Some interesting articles can be found in the magazine but some of the content is just 'plain stupid' depending on your sense of humor. The music and video reviews are pretty informative and the pornnlikes section has got to be seen to be appreciated. In all if you like the likes of FHM and MAXIM you should read Loaded at least once, make the decision and stick with it, from month to month the mag doesnt get better or worse so if you like it you like it if not dont bother... Check it out !

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Loaded was made responsible for the 'lad culture' a few years ago if you believ the media and politicians. It was certinaly a large part of teh 'new lad' phenomenom and it still is. It's the usal mix of models in compromising positions, tips for blokes to get their act together and treat their women properly, fashion tips, drinking games and adverts for watches and aftershaves. Is it me or is the editorial in Loaded a little boring? I found lots of articles that I just wasn't interested in - I'm not really interested in what a model thinks, just what she looks like! - and some of the 'lad' articles seemed a little reserved. On a comparison with FHM the magazine seemed a little tame, and the large bias towards football, something that I should have enjoyed, seemed a little overwhelming. The photography is of the highest order - yes, i agree with other people and it does border on the pornographics, but then you know what you're buying when you hand over your fiver so it's not like its going to be corrupting minds that aren't already warped! There seems to be more advets in Loadsed than in other magazines of the tpye - maybe it was just me. And so, it's not a bad magazine, it's just not as good as some of the competitors on teh high street and I won't be buying it every month.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

As a regular buyer of Loaded, I think it is one of the best magazines out there! It captures what we all do, whether male or female, without making a big deal about it. For instance - what is so wrong with going out and getting completely pissed every weekend - nothing! so Loaded will do something like 'the best pub crawl route in North London' or 'ways to cure a hangover' - stuff you can use! None of us really obey the 'don't drink, get at least 8 hours sleep each night, don't eat fatty foods' rubbish most magazines write about - so Loaded don't bother including this nonsense. There's a brilliant article by Howard Marks each month, reviews on alternative clubs, and of course cause it's a lads magazine - gorgeous pictures of women! what more could you ask for! And I'm not even a lad!

If it was not for the lovely glossy pics.......this would still be on the shelf under the top shelf magazines.... It is full of adverts on every other page and trys mixing the skool kid wirting with reviews on anything that sits still long enough...... Again if my mum's neighbour was not always in the shop when I go in.......I would be buying penthouse and a twix instead of this :) But hey........I am a sucker for a pretty face!!!!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Loaded is one of those "almost top-shelf" magazines - you know the ones with a picture of a scantily-clad famous female on the front cover. Well, this reason was a good enough one for me to buy the December 2000 issue. Also, the added attraction of a 2001 calendar seemed a bonus. Well the calendar is indeed just that, and with a free gift such as this, it's worth 3 quid of any blokes' money. However, I must say, I was rather disappointed with the actual content of the magazine. OK, so I know most blokes probably buy this magazine purely for the glossy pictures of famous females wearing not a lot, and don't exactly say "My goodness, she'll catch a chill wearing that!" But for 3 quid, one actually expects a tad more than 124 pages out of 267 full of adverts. That's a whole 46% of the magazine devoted to adverts. Shocking. That's not counting the 20 or so pages on fashion, which is really another platform for selling products. To me, Loaded is the ITV of magazines. You can hardly tell the difference between the adverts and the actual articles. A distinct lack of famous celebrities in this issue also disappointed me: Isla Fisher, Jessie Wallace and Holby City's Anna Mountford hardly get the pulse racing I'm afraid to say! Neither for that matter do the articles about Peter O'Toole, Pete Tong , Ralf Little and even Richard Whiteley. Very bizarre, I thought, as were the rest of the features. The article about the Beast of Bodmin moor almost sent me to sleep. Sorry Mr. Editor-in-chief Alan Lewis (for that's his name), but this month's edition of Loaded magazine was about as riveting as watching paint dry. A final gaze down the cast list responsible for this month's edition highlights a certain Mike Soutar - he used to work for "Smash Hits." It shows.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Loaded always gets criticised for being too childish and being extremely soft porn. In some ways this is true: the articles aren't usually about high brow topics and the pictures are often more revealing than in FHM and other more upmarket magazines but the reason I buy Loaded is not for the porn but for the genuinley funny items. The writers actually produce funny, interesting articles, often about things young men are interested in, instead of some magazines that write about stuff no-one wants to read(like me). The best thing about Loaded is the giveaway things at christmas and the calendars. I would reccomend Loaded to any young person: have a read of it, you might like it,and anyone with a sense of humour. I buy Loaded regularly and at £2.90 a month it is hardly a major draw on your finances. Go on, give it a try.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Well, how ironic. The first 'bloke' magazine. Without it, there's no doubt we wouldn't have FHM, Esquire or Maxim nowadays. And... it sucks! Pretty much all of the content is aimed directly at either pub or club culture, and the inane, childish ramblings often just come over as just 'irritating and smarmy' rather then the desired 'funny'. The articles are tedious as well, but what with most of the pictures apparently photographed by infants, you’ll find plenty else to pity. Perhaps the worst section is the reviews- in the case of both films and games, every word they say revolves directly around hype and clearly is designed to get them ‘street cred’ rather than to help people decide what to buy. Overall: Poorly written by tasteless idiots. A few nice pictures. But, without it there would be no FHM or Esquire, so as long as it leaves quietly I won't go on about it...
