A New Addict Writes (Marie Claire)
Advantages: Mature, realistic, strikes a chord, varied, award-winning journalism Disadvantages: too expensive? (but worth it, I think)
I have fallen in love. No, not with a shampoo, but with this fantastic mag, which I have been reading for only a few issues but have already become addicted. As a 17 year-old I guess I am probably one of the younger readers of Marie Claire, but it really does hit the spot for me. This is a refreshingly different, not at all frothy and very balanced woman's magazine that is mature in style and accurate in content. As a would-be women's magazine journalist, the features are an inspiration: a rare find if you consider some of the junk we are presented with today. The second issue I bought was a self-esteem special and I haven't felt so good about myself for a long time. At my age it is very easy to get caught up in the 'I-must-be-thin-to-be-of-value' way of thinking, with all these media images that are constantly and unrelentingly thrust in our faces. Marie Claire has declared it's intention to encourage feelings of self-worth that are so sadly lacking in many (especially women's)lives and, especially in this issue, taught me that to love and respect yourself is the first step towards happiness and a positive outlook.
