Advantages: quality journalism
Disadvantages: nothing important
The best on the UK market anyway. For sheer quantity of readable material with a reasonably broad appeal this must be the UK winner. My gripe with most magazines is that I can get through them in 30 minutes flat, but, at the very least, Marie Claire offers value for money with a wide range of articles on the widest range of topics you'll find in a women's magazine. It manages to appeal to a good range of ages and lifestyles without ever talking down to anyone - an increasingly rare achievement. It's won more awards for the quality of its journalism in recent years than any other title and its features on issues relating to women abroad are as good as anything you'll read in any medium in any country. It still manages to retain, however, a sense of humour, which the new contenders, like Frank, sadly lack. Personally, I could do with less high street fashion and everyone's magazine staple favourite - the problem page, is missing but they are relatively small quibbles. The media pundits thought, at its launch, that MC couldn't beat the heavyweights like Cosmo and predicted a very short and expensive (to its publishers) lifespan. Sometimes it's nice to see them get it wrong!
