Advantages: Packed with info, Now in colour, Good for suppliers
Disadvantages: A few too many ads
As an avid reader my magazine bill is huge, however, there is only one magazine I actually subscribe to and thats the martial arts magazine Combat.
It is aimed at the mainstream martial artist but covers a variety of arts such as kickboxing, taekwondo, karate, and wing chun as well as some of the lesser known arts such as savate, silat and systema.
The layout is similar each issue although they like to throw in a few different things sometimes to keep the reader interested.
In general there is at least one profile of a famous martial artist and an introduction to one of the arts. For example in this issue (August) the main artists featured are Wing Chun expert Emin Boztepe and UFC champion Frank Shamrock and the arts are Seni Silat Meyalu and Tai Chi Chuan.
There is usually a section on martial arts books and videos and reviews of martial arts films, useful to the likes of myself looking to read up on their chosen art or expand their knowledge.
There is always the letters page and at the back is a directory of clubs and suppliers if anyone is looking for a place to train or buy equipment. Equipment suppliers also have their adverts interspersed through out the pages, often with pictures of merchandise and web addresses or contact numbers. Alongside the letters page is the newsline page where readers can email or write with news that is happening in the martial arts world that they think other readers may be interested in.
They also have a number of martial artists who regularly write for the magazine on any number of issues from self defence to training tips to competition preparation.
This months issues covered are : self defence in a car jacking situation, dealing with confrontation and history of the arts. Contributors include the likes of Jamie O Keefe or Mike Finn.
There is usaully news from the mixed martial arts competitions such as the cage wars or seni semi combat and details of up a
nd coming seminars or events such as Seni 2002 or the Shaolin Monks. Competitons coming up are featured in a calender of events.
The magazine is now full colour and usually 120-140 pages...not bad for £2.50 per month.
It is a useful magazine for everyone from the experienced martial artist to the novice or even someone who merely wishes to learn about the arts. Enjoy
