Advantages: Top names, , top pundits, it is for the thinking man.
Disadvantages: Not quite as intricate as Four Four Two, sometimes lacks analysis.
Match of the Day, or for convienience, MOTD, has been the leading football magazine in the UK for a fair number of years now. Firstly, the name gets it curiousity from buyers who normally wouldn't really think of buying a football magazine. Usually, I would understand why. In the past, football magazines have eithe been aimed at primary school kids, or at the very knowledgeable fan.. and a slightly old knowledge hound at that. The record isn't great. Shoot and Match are the two "kids" football magazines, and are targeted at boys from 7-14. The columns are not great, the interviews are straight and direct, the articles are undemanding. Generally easy reading, not really worth bothering with in all honesty. But recently Shoot have released the inventively titled Shoot Monthly. This is aimed at an older aged male, that is evident from the more advanced articles and deeper interviews. But still, Shoot is Shoot and can never be taken too seriously. Four Four Two, on the other hand, is a superb read, and is aimed at the mentioned section of knowledgeable fans with a lot of time on their hands...they will certainly need time, the magazine dwarfs nearly every other magazine, football and non-football, that I have ever witnessed...and I used to work in a newsagents! But, somehwat sadly, I cannot seem to find the magazine anywhere now, and I fear it may have been discontinued. That is a shame if it is true. But is was also a blessing in disguise, as I started to buy MOTD. Don't get me wrong dooyooers, I bought the odd copy of MOTD here and there, but on average I only bought two or three copies a year. But I was impressed when I read it, but just preferred Four Four Two over it. Alas, now that Four Four Two is apparently gone forever, MOTD has been my monthly football feast. As some of you may now from reading my earlier opinions (please do) I am a huge fan of Liverpool, and to not buy a football magazine would leave me in the
dark about my favourite team. However, I would probably buy thr Liverpool magazine if I could find it anywhere, sadly it doesnt seem to sell in many areas. MOTD has star quality, and features columns from many of our well known (now ex) MOTD pundits and commentators Jimmy Hill, Garth Crooks and Alan Hansen. These all bring their own food to the table, and I strongly advise reading each one as they will always interest you...even if old Chinner does tend to waffle occasionaly!! The magazine is packed though with articles and interviews that run deeper than the the avergage Joe Bloggs interview. They are reflective and intrigueing, and feature some of the biggest names in the world of football. For a fairly cheap price, this magazine must be bought for any self proclaimed football fan. Leave Shoot for the kids, this is a thinking mans magaizne. Although saying that I will stop buying it once I can find Four Four Two again...whenever that may be. But MOTD is currently the best around. It scores every time! Thankyou very much indeed for taking the time to read my opinion, it is greatly appreciated. Tissuezone.

lamorna - 09/07/01 I need a tissue ;{} I hate football. My first husband would got to watch Chelsea on a Saturday and not come home till Tuesday. I innocently believed footie matches lasted three days. Don't ask me where he was? I've never discovered, but I enjoyed your opinion which shows how forgiving I am...Lamorna |
